With so much competition for an exciting career in marketing, it’s crucial that those who want to apply and begin their working lives in this sector must show that they are above the competition. With that in mind, here are some tips on starting a career in marketing that you can grow with as time goes on.

Have A Broad Base

Although there are degree courses that specialize in this or that aspect of marketing, having a broader education base can often be a better option. It shows employers that you have wider knowledge, plus it covers not only the topic you feel you need for your next step, but others that you might not have considered but that end up being exactly what gives you the opportunity you have been looking for.

Studying in a generalist capacity, for example, will give you the broad base that many employers are looking for and will also show you where your strengths and weaknesses lie so that you can apply for jobs that will suit your skills the best. You can then go on to specialize in marketing in a further course. After this, the world is open to you, literally – if you want to work in a different country, you can find an employer of record and see what is available. Or you can stay closer to home and even open your own business.

Study Brands You Love

If you want to get into marketing, you need to know what other marketers do. Study the brands you love and work out precisely what is going on behind the scenes in their marketing. Once you know what you love about the work, you can start to use the parts that you like – adapted, of course – in your own ideas. This will make you better at what you do, and it will also mean that it is easier to get new ideas and make things happen much faster.

It can also be a good idea to collect marketing materials wherever you go. It may seem like a strange hobby, but for someone with a genuine love of marketing, it can be fascinating. You can take your time to study each piece of material and work out what is good and what isn’t. Read whatever you can as much as you can, and you will start to get some great ideas of your own.

Get Experience

As well as a degree, experience is always something that a potential employer will be looking for on your resume. It shows just how serious you are about getting into marketing, plus it can also show your talents much more easily than an interview would do.

Experience can come in many forms. Shadowing someone in a marketing role will work, as will an internship. However, if you cannot do this due to commitments with your study, for example, then make your own experience by working on your own projects. They may not actually be used for anything when it comes to marketing, but the more you do, the better you will become.

Keep Learning

Even after you have obtained your degree, you should always continue to learn. Attend conferences and talks, and get involved in discussions. Do this whether it will lead to a career or not, or even if you have secured a job already. Continued learning is the best way to ensure job security and progression.
