The first job out of college might not be what you envisioned, but it’s important to remember that a meaningful career is all about playing the long game. Everybody aspires to have a purpose in their lives, but what does it take to build a meaningful career?

Define “Meaningful”

Everybody has their own interpretation of the word. It could be your choice of industry, or it could be about your ethical approaches to the overarching mission. When you start to consider the definition of “meaningful,” this will make the most significant difference in being okay with your job and being deeply happy and fulfilled. This means you have to go beyond the sacred cows like salary or the company’s reputation.

Take the Opportunities to Reflect

When you are in your first job, it is essential to reflect on how it’s going, not just in terms of your skills, but the job in the long run. It’s important to remember that there is a lot of time to build your career, and the big mistake many people make is thinking they need to make a significant impact now. But if you start too early, you could end up being unfulfilled by the age of 30! When you begin to think about your job in relation to your career, but also in terms of your life, you will be able to answer what a meaningful career is to you.

Never Be Afraid to Diversify

The fact is that, in certain industries, there is a diverse nature of roles, and we tend to think that once we have done one type of job in an industry, that is it and we cannot progress. But, as you can see from the infographic below, there are a number of ways for nursing practitioners to diversify their efforts in numerous environments. A meaningful career depends on your definition, but there is no rush to get the right career right now.
