Your Makeover

Revamping your job search strategy can help you stand out from the competition and increase your chances of landing your dream job. In today’s job market, companies are looking for candidates who possess a unique set of skills and experience, making it more challenging to secure job opportunities. A revamp of your job search approach can help you highlight your strengths, make your resume stand out, improve your interview skills, and expand your network. By taking a proactive approach to your job search and repositioning yourself, you can present yourself as a top candidate to potential employers and increase your chances of success.

Skills and Experience

Review your skills and experience. Does your resume truly reflect all that you’ve accomplished and the skills you’ve acquired? Don’t be shy about highlighting your achievements – now is the time to showcase everything you’ve done over the last ten years. List every accomplishment, success, and the corresponding skills you’ve utilized, and make sure they are accurately reflected in your resume. By doing so, you can ensure that potential employers have a clear understanding of your capabilities and qualifications, and increase your chances of landing the job you want.

Printing Your resume

You must bring copies of your resume to an interview (don’t assume the interviewer has a copy).  Plain white paper? Everyone has that. Use something that will stand out and show employers that you are serious about your job search (and your resume). It’s a small detail, but the paper you use to print your resume really does matter. If you hand over your resume on see-through, low-quality, sorta crinkled paper from the bottom of your desk drawer – it’s just not going to cut it. Resume-quality paper is available and affordable on Amazon and at most office supply stores. It will be well worth the investment.

Once you’ve got your killer resume and are ready to print it on your premium paper, consider FedEx Office or some other professional printing service.

Research

Research the companies where you would like to work. What type of research? If they are a publicly held company, look up their financials (make sure they are a viable company). You can also lookup how employees rate the company (you don’t want to work for a company that no one likes). What about other company rankings (best company to work for, etc.)? Take a look at glassdoor.com (see the chart below).

Interviews

It won’t help if you get the interview but can’t get through the interview. Maybe it’s time to take review your interview skills and interview questions.  Maybe you need personalized interview coaching to help you ace the interview.

Networking

It is all about who you know (sorry, it just is). While not every job will be sourced through some contact, the vast majority will (and are). networking is not only about who you know (friends, family and colleagues), it’s also about who knows who you know (if that makes any sense). It sometimes comes down to “six degrees of separation” (aka “it’s a small world”) which means you need to leverage your network in a different way. In “the old days”, there was no easy way to tell who knew who, but today there are a number of websites that can tell you who is linked to who.
