Tapping Into the Hidden Job Market

For every employer who must downsize, there is an employer who needs to hire the right person for the right job. In any circumstance, businesses are always hiring someone that can make them profitable now!

“We have a hiring freeze,” does not mean they are not hiring. It just means they are not increasing their headcount (but they are replacing employees who have left the firm). Every company has some level of staff turnover, so in a 1,000-employee company, there are going to be job opportunities due to this turnover. In fact, 80% of jobs are not publicly advertised.

Networking is crucial for finding the hidden job market. Use your current network and the following contacts.  If you are currently employed, make sure that people know so that they can protect your confidentiality.

Companies you have interviewed in the past

Take another look at companies where you’ve previously interviewed.  Contact the HR representative and the managers that you interviewed. If you were close to getting a job there, go back and see if they have any current openings. They will be happy to reconsider you and they know that you are interested in their company.

Previous managers and co-workers

Managers who have moved on to other companies are great resources. You’ve worked with them before and they already know your skills and your worth. This makes it easier to consider you for any opportunities in their department or to recommend you to others in their organization. They may also be aware of opportunities at other companies. If you are still employed, make sure they are individuals who honor that confidentiality.

Members of organizations where you were active

There are quite a few groups and organizations that can help you with your search. Fraternities, sororities, professional business associations, charity groups, fundraisers, athletic clubs, etc. People in these organizations already know you and can help refer you to others who may have job openings. Networking with your contacts can in turn lead you to the jobs.

Recruiters focused on your industry

Many recruiters specialize in specific industries or job functions. Contact several recruiters to let them know that you are looking for a job.  Also, give them candidate referrals for other open positions and they will have more incentive to help you in your job search. The nature of their work makes them an invaluable source of information and contacts.

Business organizations in your field

If you don’t already belong, join business organizations in your industry and field. Stay involved by joining committees, becoming a committee leader, or possibly getting on the Board of Directors. You will meet relevant people while creating a brand for yourself showing your commitment to your industry.  Additionally, these activities make great additions to your resume.

Non-profit organizations

Volunteer work is both rewarding and can help you make new contacts that may lead to job opportunities.  If you already work in the private sector, there may even be jobs available at these organizations. Non-profit groups value talent from any industry to help them with administration, management, marketing, sales, and consulting. Target organizations that support your passion or cause (and also add this to your resume).
