While you’re probably thinking it’s too early to start thinking about your child’s future career, the truth is it’s never too early to help them prepare for their future. Many people find that they leave school or college without some key skills that will be useful for their careers, lacking the skills that employers are looking for.

The good news is that you can give them a boost with some learning at home, with fun activities that will keep your kids occupied, while also learning some valuable new skills!

Help them learn another language

They say that one of the ways to get ahead in your career is to learn something new, and one of the key things you can do is learn another language. Children’s minds are like sponges when they’re younger, which makes it a great time for them to learn other languages. It can be a fun activity for both parents and children and could help them become fluent at a young age too.

Boost their writing skills

Writing is a very important skill to learn, and while kids will learn a lot about writing at school, there is more you can do to help them improve their writing skills at home too. From encouraging them to read more for fun, to writing letters and keeping a journal, there are different ways they can flex their writing skills. Being able to write in different ways will help them at school, college, and beyond and will be especially useful when it comes to writing job applications in years to come.

Teach them how to code

The world is a digital place, and many employers are keen to see digital skills from candidates trying for roles in their companies. Learning how to code is something kids can do from a young age with Codakid or Whitehat Jr, and could even encourage their interest in this field for their future careers. With different coding games and toys available, it can be a great way for them to learn a useful, interesting skill while having fun too!

Work with them to help others

Volunteering can help your children develop so many wonderful and useful skills. Not only can it teach them to be considerate to others, but it can introduce them to other people and learn skills they might not be able to learn at school or at home. By volunteering as a family, you could all free up some of your time to help others and make a difference in your community.

It’s going to be a while before your child has to think about their future career, but as a parent, there are things you can do to help them prepare for their future. Even getting them to help with tasks around the house can teach them different skills and responsibilities, helping them become independent, well-rounded teens and adults. Make learning opportunities fun and it won’t even feel like they’re working!
