Keep Calm

Being responsible for a project’s success or failure can be quite stressful, as your reputation and possibly your job are on the line. When things start to fall apart, it takes skill and talent to regain control and get the project back on track. If you need to work after hours, use corporate email and internal social media to capture everyone’s attention. Leveraging social media is quite acceptable these days, especially for startups or SMBs (small to medium-sized companies). Remember to use social media liberally, as it remains informal and allows you to socialize while managing your project. Stay cool and informal, and keep your project participants focused on meeting their goals.

Encourage Your Project Team

Some people require more encouragement than others. If you notice that your team is falling behind or your business analyst or designer is struggling to respond to emails and project deliverables, it’s your responsibility as the project manager and team leader to get the team back on track. Celebrate milestones, both big and small, and motivate your team to help them reach their goals.

Setting goals

As the project manager, it’s your responsibility to set the vision for the project team members, even if you don’t dictate the process. Not all team members can see the big picture or fully understand the goals. Break projects into smaller deliverables and goals, emphasizing everything that has gone well. Correct mistakes quickly and focus on what is working. Aim to inspire rather than dwell on failures, and motivate your staff so they feel ownership of the big picture.

Increase Retention

Even if you have a team of freelancers, retention should still be a priority. It takes time and effort to find and build a project team with the right people and skills. Losing team members during a project can distract from the overall goal and potentially cause the project to fail. As a team manager, maintaining a calm demeanor will lead to better results.

A key part of a project’s success is finding the right team members and skills, as well as the project manager’s ability to provide clear instructions and constructive feedback.

Communicating Effectively with Project Team Members

When meeting with team members, avoid diving straight into business. Consider your project meetings as informal get-togethers. Spend some time chatting informally before officially starting the meeting. Then, gradually transition into the project discussion. Remember, you are the glue that holds everything together; finding the right approach for your project and team is crucial.
