How to Show You Have What It Takes to Be a Manager

Advancing into management is a great goal to have for your career. In many careers, it’s the best way to earn more money. It also means taking on more responsibilities and being a leader for others. But getting into management can be difficult because you need to be able to show that you’re capable of doing the job. To take on a managerial position, you often need to show that you have management experience. So how can you show that you have what it takes to be a manager so that you can get your first management role?

Brush Up on Key Skills

Managers need to have some key skills if they want to be successful leaders. Being a manager isn’t just about telling people what to do, you need to actually be able to manage both people and tasks. You might want to actively take steps to improve the skills that you need to be a good manager. Consider some coaching skills training so that you can learn how to coach your team. There are lots of courses you can take, both online and in person if you want to build your skills. You can also look for opportunities outside of work to help you grow these skills.

Take the Initiative

Managers need to be problem solvers. You have to be able to take the initiative, fix things when there’s a problem, and work out for yourself how to do something you’re unsure of. Showing that you’re able to do this involves not just identifying problems and taking them to your manager, but going a step further and finding out how to solve a problem for yourself. You don’t even necessarily have to be a very creative thinker to do this. Many problems can be solved with a quick Google or by asking someone else, and it still counts as taking the initiative and getting things done.

Ask for Small Management Responsibilities

To show that you’re capable of being a manager, you can start with small management tasks. Ask your boss if there are any managerial tasks that they would be willing to let you take on. Not only does it save them some time, but it also gives you the opportunity to show what you’re capable of. You might be able to help out your manager while they’re away by taking on some of their usual responsibilities too.

Make an Effort to Understand the Company

If you want to be a manager with your current company, it’s important to understand the structure of the company and how everything works. While it’s necessary to know your own role inside and out, you should also look beyond that and make sure you know as much about the company as possible. This can range from what the company’s visions and goals are to what you’ve learned about the inner workings of the company since you’ve been working there.

To show that you have what it takes to be a manager, take the initiative and start demonstrating what you’re capable of.
