Writing
Dedicate a few hours each day to sharpen your writing skills. Read quotations, news, and sample pieces, to improve your vocabulary and writing prowess. Students must know the correct format of formal and informal letters, articles, essays, advertisements, and other topics mentioned in the syllabus. Let us discuss a few points for each of these topics:
1. Letters –
-
- Begin writing a letter with proper salutation and address. Add a subject line and greet the person you’re addressing your letter to.
- A good practice is to divide your letter into three distinct paragraphs.
- In the first paragraph, you’re supposed to introduce yourself as the writer of the letter along with the assigned topic. This will open the grounds for the next section.
- The second paragraph is going to be the body of your work. Here, you are going to describe your subject in detail, with special attention to points specified in the question (if any). This is going to allow you to correctly formulate an exhaustive answer to any creative question.
- The third and final paragraph should ideally contain the concluding remarks. This has to include a short note of thanks along with a request for a reply or solution in case of a formal letter; and well wishes in case of an informal letter.
2. Essays –
-
- Once again, try to divide your content properly to ensure ease of writing, understanding, and in turn, marking. The traditional categorisation of introduction, body, and conclusion is perfect for a class 10 student.
- Introduce your topic with a relevant quotation or slogan for brownie points. Then, you can begin with the actual introduction.
- The body must have extensive details and must be concise and crisp at the same time. The goal is to include as many points as possible without sounding forced or boring.
- The conclusion should be the perfect ending to your essay. You can emphasise your title or the main topic covered in the final few lines for an edge.
3. Articles/advertisements – There’s only one way to correctly answer this question, and that is to follow the prescribed format as closely as possible. If that is done, you can be sure about a good enough score, provided there are no sentence construction errors. It is important to stick to the word limit and adhere to the topic without any digression. Sentence construction should be grammatically correct and creative.
