Find Your Why

One of the most challenging parts of achieving any goal is understanding why you want to do it. If you’re struggling with motivation, take some time to reflect on what your “why” is. Why do you want to get a better job? Why do you want to lose weight? Why do you want to graduate from school?

If you cannot answer these seemingly simple questions, there is a high likelihood that you might give up before you even start. However, once you identify what truly drives your motivation, you will have a solid foundation to support and guide you. It is easy to get distracted or overwhelmed by the chaos of everyday life, but when you consistently remind yourself of your purpose, it becomes significantly easier to persevere and continue progressing toward your goals.

Visualize Your Goal

Once you have figured out why you want something, you need to visualize your goal. You should have a clear image of what success looks like for you, and then keep it in mind whenever things start to feel difficult or like you are getting nowhere. This means that if you want to get a better position at work, then you need to imagine yourself in that role and what it would feel like.

If you want to write a book but do not know where to start, then visualize the finished product. Imagining your goal is one of the best ways to keep you on track when things are tough. The more specific and realistic your goal is, the better it will be to keep in mind.

Take a Break

When you have been working towards something for a long time, sometimes it can all get too much. You might be getting nowhere and it can all feel pointless, especially if you are not seeing any results. At times like this, it is important to give yourself a break, even just for a few minutes or an hour. Pushing yourself too hard is not going to help you achieve your goal, and it might even make it harder.

Sometimes the best thing you can do for yourself is just take a step back and relax for a bit. This does not mean giving up on your goals or letting yourself become lazy. It just means that you need to recharge your batteries so you can push through the tough times and keep going until you reach your goal.

Break Down Your Goals

It is easy to feel overwhelmed when there are a lot of things on your to-do list, but it is important that you do not let it get to you. If you have to write a two-thousand-word essay, then you are not going to sit down and do it all at once. You need to break it down into more manageable chunks so you can work on each one without feeling overwhelmed.

You should also have a plan for when you will do the different sections, so you know when everything needs to be finished. This will help you get a better idea of what is expected and how much time you have for each task, which can make it seem less daunting. Writing the introduction sounds much more doable than doing the whole thing in one go, right?

Get Rid of Distractions

When you are trying to focus on something and reach a goal, it can be really difficult if there are distractions around you. This might be things like your phone or social media notifications that keep getting in the way, or it might be people around you who are making noise. Whatever the distraction is, it can make it much harder to accomplish what you want.

This, of course, can apply to larger distractions in your life as well. For example, you are trying to gain your diploma but you keep getting sidetracked by all the college parties. Of course, there is nothing wrong with having fun, but education is still your primary goal and you should decrease the number of parties you attend.

Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World

In DEEP WORK, author and professor Cal Newport flips the narrative on impact in a connected age. Instead of arguing distraction is bad, he instead celebrates the power of its opposite. Dividing this book into two parts, he first makes the case that in almost any profession, cultivating a deep work ethic will produce massive benefits.

Set Deadlines for Yourself

When it comes to deadlines, most of us dread them thinking about the frantic attempts to finish the tasks on time. However, some people find it easier to focus on work when they have a clear picture of when something should be done or when there is a little pressure to motivate them. That is why you could try setting deadlines for yourself.

However, you need to be realistic about it. If a deadline is too soon, then it can create unnecessary pressure on you which may cause you to give up or panic. This is crucial with large projects and tasks – you cannot simply wake up one day and decide that you are going to write a book by the end of the week.

If you want to give yourself some structure, set smaller goals for each section rather than thinking about it all at once.

Reward Yourself

Similarly, large projects oftentimes do not have that much of a clear reward attached, or it’s only there once you are finished. This can make it seem unappealing to try and push through the tough times, but if you give yourself a reward for each small goal that you reach, then it will be more motivating.

For example, if your goal is to write five pages of your book per week, then promise yourself that you will have a cupcake at the end of each day. This way, you are working towards something and will be motivated to carry on because there is an immediate reward waiting for you.

To Sum Up

You might sometimes feel like you are not good enough or that it is too hard to try and reach your goals, but this does not have to be true. Everyone has different motivation techniques that work for them, so find out what works best for you and give yourself a chance to succeed.

From dividing your tasks into manageable chunks and setting deadlines to giving yourself a break every now and again, there are many things you can do to make it seem less daunting. It is important to remember that even if something feels impossible, you can still do it, and nobody else but you are in charge of your success or failure. Give yourself the chance to succeed, and you will be amazed by what you can achieve!
