We all wait for a little rest: a vacation, holidays, summer break. But just as long we wait for them, as quickly they end, and we’re left with the feeling that this precious time has disappeared. However, while laying in bed for a couple of months seems nice, there are more enjoyable ways to spend your summer break – and maximize the use of your time.

If you don’t know what to do over the summer breaks in college, there are several fun activities or projects you can choose from. In this article, you can find the most popular ones – feel free to mix or modify them depending on your hobbies and preferences. The only rule is: have fun.

Yes, productivity and personal development seem important even during summer break. However, as the name suggests, it should be your break – from stress, hard work, and bad emotions. Recharging the batteries is important both for your physical and mental health – and only if you feel rested can you get back to work with 100% of energy when autumn comes.

Get a Job

Or an internship. Summer break is the best time to live up to your creative potential, acquire new skills and get some job experience. Even if your tasks will have nothing to do with your future profession, it’s still a valuable opportunity to earn some money and see the job industry from the inside. Whether it’s full-time or part-time, make sure to do your best, but don’t overwork yourself – after all, it’s your summer break.

You can look for positions close to your future profession, but very often, it might not be possible to find one. In such a case, don’t hesitate to try something completely different. You can, for example, work part-time in your local store, or take a copywriting internship, or rent a car with a company like HyreCar and drive with Uber – if you have a driver’s license, of course. There are many summer job opportunities out there, you just have to put effort into looking for them.

Volunteer

If you don’t want to work but still want to acquire experience and do something good, join a volunteer project – either in your country or abroad. Try to look for something close to your heart – aiding the elderly, looking after children, working against climate change, helping in religious sanctuaries, teaching your native language, or something entirely different. Compare several programs to find what you want to do, and apply. Trust us – it’ll be an unforgettable experience.

Take a Course

Expand your skills, or learn something you’ve always wanted to do. Coding, website design, playing the ukulele, crocheting, storytelling, time management, or SMM – choose whatever your heart desires. Look for online or offline courses.

You can try something close to your future profession or field of study, so you’ll have the necessary skills and experience before starting working. Or you can find a new hobby, explore your interests and pursue your creativity. Whatever you choose, make sure you enjoy it and learn something new.

Make Plans

When is the best time to make plans other than during your summer break? It may seem boring but think of it as a way of fulfilling your dreams. Find a notebook (or even a scrapbook) and get creative. Write down your plans for the next year:

  • Your life. What are you going to do? Study, work, develop your skills and explore your hobbies, or maybe travel?
  • Your budget. How much money you have, how much will you get during the year, how are you going to spend it?
  • Your main goals. What do you want to achieve in the next year?

Explore

Explore your life and the world around you. Visit another country – where did you always want to go? Europe, Asia, Africa? If you can’t afford a trip, think about study courses or volunteer programs abroad?  If you can’t or don’t want to go abroad, travel in your home country or even take a tour around your city and learn new things.

Or, if you prefer to stay at home, explore your own mind. Learn more about mental health, try meditation or yoga, or simply read a book – whatever works for you.

Enjoy It

Summer break can be very productive or very lazy, depending on what you want to do. However, one of the main problems is that summer always ends too soon. Fortunately, there are many things you can do to maximize the time you have and enjoy all of it.

You can look for jobs or internships to acquire experience and necessary skills for your future profession; or, if you don’t want to start working so early in your life, try volunteer programs. Consider taking an online or offline course to learn something new, write down your plans for the next year, or travel. The main rule is: you have to enjoy it. Do only the things that make you happy – and your summer break will be unforgettable.
