When we think about undertaking a rewarding career, one with longevity and daily challenges and progression, we might think of becoming an entrepreneur, or a doctor, perhaps, or maybe an airline pilot. Always up there with the first options to come to mind is a career in law. But do you have what it takes? Are you suited? For an idea of how a law firm might look and operate, check out this personal injury lawyer from Riverside, for example. Otherwise, let’s take a look at some of the personality traits that could mean you are suited to a career in law.
Assertiveness (but not to the point of appearing aggressive)
Some legal matters can be small, whilst other legal matters can be large and life-changing. When faced with a client who wants you to provide either quick answers to a relatively straightforward case, or continuing legal counsel over the course of a lengthy courtroom battle, it is your assertiveness that will be key in assuring the client that you are the suited person for the job. This doesn’t mean that you should be one track minded and closed to suggestions, but it does mean that you should have the ability to deliver information in a way that is confident and self-assured. Only in this way will the client feel that they are being represented by a lawyer that understands both the process in general and how to follow things through.
Creativity (a mind that can think around corners)
No two legal cases are the same. Even cases that seem similar on the surface will involve different people with different circumstances. That is why lawyers must possess a streak of creativity. Due process will outline the common factors that may be expected within the course of a legal case, but it is creativity on behalf of the lawyer that can steer the case in new directions where deemed desirable.

Perseverance. Perseverance. Perseverance
Perseverance is maybe not as common a trait as you might think. How many times have you heard people saying things in exasperation like “well, what do you want me to do about it!?” and “Oh, I give up!?”. Granted, not all things are worthy of spending our time on, and sometimes it is more useful to us to move on to more pressing matters. But in general, people who are more likely to quit when the going gets tough are not considered to have the depth of perseverance that people who have undertaken a successful career in law might typically be expected to possess. However, if you do have perseverance and a determined attitude, you may well find roles in the legal arena to be a rewarding choice of career.
