It is telling, indeed, that Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook is now officially called Meta. The name change is part of the company’s wish to evolve into a new means of social connection; one in which people can socialize, exercise, do business, fundraise, collaborate, learn, and play games in 3D spaces. The metaverse will be made up of a variety of technologies—including virtual reality, augmented reality, and smart glasses. The best example of how dynamic, fantastic, and entertaining the metaverse is can be found in the film, Ready Player One. In the metaverse (a collective project taken part in by various companies specializing in everything from social media to gaming), people will decide what they look like, where they live, and where they wish to meet and greet others. What roles can people with studies in design fulfill in this new “land of plenty?”
Interior Designers Will Rule
One of the most important components of the metaverse is the private and social places people wish to inhabit. In order for these spaces to express the tastes, values, and philosophies of gamers or users, they need to be customizable. Those who work in design centered professions—including interior designers and interior architects. As the metaverse becomes increasingly more sophisticated, specialisms like residential interior design and commercial interior design will be increasingly necessary, with designers creating templates that allow users to play with colors, fabrics, materials, layouts, and more.
Jumping into Virtual Worlds
The metaverse will enable users to enjoy a wide range of virtual experiences—from virtual group yoga classes to product trials, virtual travel, and more. These experiences can be accessed by users via a VR headset and complex setups can include head-mounted displays with hand controllers and positional tracking. In some times of VR, the user enters into a completely new environment once they place the headset on, giving designers the chance to show off their talent at drawing natural, urban, ancient, and futuristic settings that will enable users to “go back to the future” if they wish.
Virtual Fashion Comes to the Fore
Fashion designs should also start honing their digital skills, as designer outfits will be huge in the metaverse. As people create their metaverse identities, clothing will become a key way to express their aspirations and values and users will have customized avatars that change outfits according to their mood. Not only will clothing need to be on par with Big Four Fashion Week styles, but it will also need to leap years ahead of what designers are currently offering shoppers. Think NFT clothing that can be resold or exchanged for other items, fashion-inspired on fiction by some of the greatest sci-fi authors of all time, and completely unique pieces for use in sports, activities, and leisure activities that are yet to be discovered.

Click To TweetThe metaverse is already a reality, with the gaming world currently taking the lead. Facebook’s transformation into META is symbolic of the big role that digital connections will have in people’s lives. As people become accustomed to creating new avatars, living in new homes, and owning the kind of fashion that doesn’t even exist, the talent, passion, and vision of designers will become increasingly necessary.
