Five Things All Employees Should About Their Rights

Employees have very little to no rights in private companies. It’s not that there are no rules or laws; they are just not taught to us. It’s better for people in higher positions to control us if we stay unaware. This is the reason why even the most educated people don’t know much about it. Here I have shared some employee rights that they don’t want you to know.

You Can’t be Terminated without a Relief

Bosses often act as if they can just fire us and sabotage our livelihood. They should be sensitive toward matters that could affect our ability to feed our families. However, many unprofessional people are not. That said, they really can’t just fire us like that. If they do, it comes at a great cost. They have to pay you a severance package that includes a big cheque and some benefits. This is to ensure that your transition from one job to another is not difficult. No company wants to pay this, but they are bounded by the law. Contact a top labor lawyer if a company refuses your rights. You can go to court and have the employer or the company pay for causing you trouble.

“Do you know your rights as an employee? If not, you could unwittingly become the victim of discrimination at work or suffer from having your rights violated. These can have negative effects on the progress of your career and your source of income.” – Know Your Rights Regarding Employment

You Can Keep Copies of the Documents You Sign

In many companies, they don’t even let you bring the employment contract back to your home. They ask you to read and sign it now. There is usually no discussion or any flexibility in changing any clauses. Furthermore, you are not even given the document to bring back with you. Not many know that you can keep a copy of the employment agreement you sign. It’s not just the employment contract but every document you ever sign in or out of the office. Each party gets to keep a copy. But for some reason, most employees don’t share these documents, unless they know their rights and ask for it.

They Can’t Ask You Anything that Goes Against Human Rights

Many people feel like they are obligated to answer or do anything their boss asks. That’s entirely incorrect. They can’t ask you to do anything that may violate your human rights. Even if it’s mentioned in the contract and you have signed it with blood, it has no legal standing if it goes against the basic rights of every human. For example, you are not obligated to answer any personal question if you don’t want to. Boss asked you to work overtime; you can refuse. You don’t have to feel like you are a slave when working. You can share what you want and do what you want if you think it would build good relations with your employer, but there is no obligation.

You Can Complain About Working Conditions

It’s considered taboo to say that something needs to be improved in your office. If you feel the management is unprofessional or the environment is not comfortable, you can complain about it to the right authorities. You can visit the official website of the Canadian government and file a complaint against their labor standards. Although it won’t be appreciated by your employer, it is your right and they can’t terminate you for it.

Equal Pay for Equal Work

Favoritism is also an unethical yet common thing found in our workplaces. Many people are paid more or promoted because they are liked for some reason other than their contribution to the company. If you believe that you have been working just as much and taking just as much responsibility as any other person who is paid more than you, it’s your right to get equal pay.
