There are five basic types of “job searchers”

  1. Not Happy – Many individuals find themselves discontented with various aspects of their work life—be it dissatisfaction with their compensation, a lack of enthusiasm for their tasks, unfavorable feelings towards their manager, overdue promotions, or a general dislike of their current company.
  2. Worried – Individuals often experience concerns related to their professional circumstances. These concerns may encompass worries about the stability of their company, the possibility of it being acquired, and similar uncertainties. Individuals might also be apprehensive about the security of their jobs, including the potential for job cuts. These concerns can extend to broader industry-related anxieties as well.
  3. Career ChangeCareer changes often stem from a desire for greater fulfillment, improved work-life balance, enhanced financial prospects, or a pursuit of new passions and skills.
  4. Not Currently Looking – Individuals who aren’t actively seeking a change in their careers may unexpectedly come across new opportunities, often through avenues like headhunters or recommendations from friends. These unexpected offers can sometimes lead them to consider making a shift they hadn’t initially planned for.
  5. Job Loss – People frequently lose their jobs for a multitude of reasons, including company downsizing, job elimination, takeovers/mergers, and even due to company bankruptcy or poor performance.

Job Search Websites

Not all job search websites are created equal; their offerings vary significantly. Some provide resume posting tools, general advice, and resources, while others offer fee-based services and may not necessarily prioritize job listings. In my perspective, it’s entirely possible to obtain everything you need for your job search without paying a fee. However, this choice is personal and may stem from a desire for specialized assistance. If you’re resourceful and persistent, you can access a wealth of job search resources through the internet, your network of family and friends, and, of course, CareerAlley.

It often seems like there’s an overwhelming number of job search websites, and not all of them are worth your time. To help you get started, I’ll briefly introduce two popular job search sites with distinct styles below. In future posts, we’ll delve deeper into more specialized job search platforms.

Keep in mind that every job search website is unique, though most of them cover the basics, which I’ve listed below for your reference. As we explore further in upcoming posts, you’ll discover that the options are plentiful, offering various resources and tools to aid your job search.

What to look for on a job search Site:

When evaluating a job search site, here are some key factors to consider:

  1. Resume Integration: Check if the site allows you to easily upload your resume into their system, though this may vary depending on the site’s features.
  2. Privacy Options: Look for a privacy feature that enables you to block specific companies. This can be extremely valuable, especially if there are firms you’d rather not work for or if you want to keep your job search confidential to avoid any potential issues with your current employer.
  3. Search Customization: Explore the site’s search customization options. Different sites have varying criteria for tailoring your job search. Some may also allow you to save multiple searches with various preferences, enabling you to quickly retrieve specific job listings based on your defined criteria.
  4. Job Match Notification: Many sites will send you email notifications with the results of your searches. However, be cautious not to receive an overwhelming number of notifications that may flood your inbox.
  5. Linked Application: Look for the ability to apply directly for job opportunities through the site. This feature typically provides a convenient link to the company’s career site, saving you time during the application process.
  6. Additional Resources: Some sites offer valuable resources such as career advice, resume-building techniques, samples of resumes, and cover letter samples. Keep in mind that these resources may vary in terms of availability and cost, with some being free and others requiring a fee.
