You may die of a misprint.” – Mark Twain

Targeted job search posts are always in the top 10 on my site and my posts on targeted Healthcare jobs are near the top of the list. The good news is that health care jobs are increasing at a rate of approximately 23,000 jobs per month (according to the Washington Post). That is more than 300,000 jobs per year! So if Health Care is your field (or you are considering it), you are in luck. If you are considering changing careers, healthcare should be on your list to consider.

There are a number of targeted resource types you should leverage, what I call “The Four Legs of Job Search“. For this post – Health Care recruiters, Health Care job search sites, specific health care companies and industry sites. Best to spread your time across these resources rather than focus on any one type.

Healthcare Recruiters: Recruiters are but one important resource in your job search. They sometimes have access to jobs that are not advertised elsewhere. But, even for jobs that are advertised elsewhere, recruiters generally have direct access to hiring managers and can help get your resume in front of the right hiring managers. Most recruiters specialize in specific industries, and healthcare is no exception.

B.E. Smith – This recruiting firm specializes in healthcare executive search and, according to their website, they are “the nation’s leading Healthcare executive search firm”. From the main page, click “Candidates” from the top of the page. From the next page, you can search for available listings. You can also select “sign in” from the left hand side of the page and register for their site. You should also take a look at “candidate solutions” and “candidate contacts” from the left hand side of the page.

Recruitment and Staffing Agencies – This list of healthcare recruitment agencies is provided by Hospitaldreamjobs.com. This page has a long list of links to recruiters and includes a brief on the recruiters’ specialties. There is also a wealth of information at the bottom of the page for job seekers. You can also select Job Seekers from the top of the page or try the quick job search link on the right hand side of the page.

Healthcare Job Search Sites – Job search sites (as I’m sure you know), aggregates job opportunities based on a list of criteria. As with most things in job search, there are a number of job search sites that specialize in the healthcare industry (either specifically or as a niche within their site).

Healthcarerecruitement.com – The main page of this site is full of great resources. The top of the page has tabs for Job Seeker Center, Browse Jobs, Manage Resume and so much more. Below this is a list of specific healthcare careers (nursing, radiology, rehab and more). Center page is a quick job search box along with highlighted employers on the right hand side of the screen. You can also register with the site and submit your resume.

Health Career Web – Another healthcare job search site, there are “thousands of jobs” according to the site. You can use the quick search center page, click on “spotlight” employers, check out their blog or peruse their articles.

Healthcare Companies – There are thousands of healthcare related companies. From hospitals, to pharmaceutical companies, to local healthcare providers. You will need to research companies in your area (or where you would like to work). You should create a list of companies in order of preference. To get you started, several links to lists are included below.

Top Health Companies on the Inc. 5000 – Inc’s list of top healthcare companies (ranked by 3-year growth), there should be quite a few companies that meet your criteria on this list. Click on any company, read the highlights, then click through to the company of your choice.

United States Healthcare Companies – This list is provided by Manta.com and provides a way to refine your search (left hand side of the page). Each company has a link, a brief overview and a list of their specialties.

Good luck in your search.

“Whatever you are, be a good one.” – Abraham Lincoln

If you’re looking to work in a fast paced and dynamic environment then retail is the industry you need to be in. With flexible hours, you can choose to work full time or part time and choose between mornings, during the day or even at night. Working in retail also isn’t limited to just serving on the shop floor, there are a variety of retail jobs to choose from such as forecasting trends as a Merchandiser, designing product displays as a Visual Merchandiser, searching for new products and predicting demand as a Buyer and many, many more.

This industry is all about being responsive in predicting consumer demand and forecasting future trends so if these sounds appealing to you, here are few tips to increase your chances of getting a job in retail:

Track Down Vacancies

If you’re struggling to find companies with retail job vacancies, it isn’t because they aren’t out there. It’s simply because companies tend to advertise vacancies on their own website. So you will have to search and visit each individual company’s website and click on their careers section. This also creates the impression that you are particularly interested in working for their company which is a plus point. Also do not be afraid to go to every store you wish to apply for yourself and hand in your CV.

Appearance is Key

In retail the majority of the time is spent interacting with customers especially when working in customer service, so your appearance is very important. Do your research and take note of what staff are wearing in store. Take note of whether the dress code is very smart and professional or casual and trendy. Especially if the company is a clothing store make sure you wear in-season clothing from their store. When handing in your CV or going for an interview first impressions is vital so present yourself well and be confident.

Sell Yourself

The first thing you need to is highlight your key skills and achievements in your CV and in interviews. Especially if you’ve worked in sales or marketing, give examples of what you have produced and achieved. It is important to always focus on what you can do for the company not what they can do for you. People tend to write ‘I’d like to work for your company to further develop my skills in…’ this isn’t going to help you stand out. What you need to concentrate on is what value you can bring to the company and how you can help them improve their business performance. Use a CV template to guide you and get ideas.

Don’t Give Up

Finally, don’t give up on your search. With the current economic climate it’s going to be tough but not impossible. The more companies you apply to the greater your chances are of getting an interview. Keep focused, motivated and remain positive.

A friend of mine found out that their job would be ending in 6 to 12 months. That sounded like more than enough time to find a great job with time to spare. Plenty of time to be patient and pick the best opportunity. Of course, that was 5 months ago and now it looks like their job will end in another 2 to 3 months. Where did all of that time go? Well I can tell you it was not spent looking for a job. When I asked her how many of her target companies has she contacted, she looked like I was speaking in tongues (“target companies?” her eyes seemed to say). We’ve all been in that situation where we had lots of time to get something done and we squandered it, and then we scramble to make up for lost time. If you are serious about finding a new job, you must treat each day as if it was your last day employed. And if you are already out of work . . .

Today’s article is the finale”of the “Wish Upon a Job” series and with a focus on your job search lists (click here for Part I, Part II). Collectively, your lists are a powerful tool. Individually they may be helpful, but they are kind of like a chair with one leg – you might be able to balance for a minute or two but a chair with four legs is a lot more useful.

My job search Mantra is “more is more”. Many job search specialists will tell you otherwise (everyone can have an opinion), but like any product on the market, if no one knows it exists no one will buy it. The more people who know you are looking for a job, the better the chance of finding one.

Recruiters – Their job is to find the best candidate for the job. Typically (unless they are on retainer), they do not get paid unless the company hires one of their candidates. Most recruiters will work with you to either help find a match between your skills and their job requisitions or in some cases convince a company to create a job based on your skills. At the end of the day they are being paid by the hiring company and there is a delicate balance between closing the deal and helping you maximize your compensation. There are a few rules of the road you should consider:

You should not have to pay a recruiter to help you find a job.

Look for recruiters in the state/region where you want to work. While many recruiters are national or international, most tend to recruit in their local market.

Look for recruiters who specialize in your industry/field. They have the best chance of marketing your skills and finding a job for you.

Don’t let a recruiter pressure you into taking a job you do not want.

Target Companies – You likely have a list (even if it’s just in your head) of companies where you would love to work. If you don’t, make one. This involves a little research, but in the end it will help you narrow the choices while improving your chances of finding a job. There are lots of advantages to creating a target list, not the least of which is maximizing your time. Most hiring managers will ask why you want to work at their company. If you’ve made your list, you already know the answer. Items to consider:

Select companies in your industry.

Include companies that have locations in the region where you want to work.

Leverage existing lists (Best Companies to Work for, Most Admired Companies, Fortune 500, etc.). Much of the research has been done for you.

Talk to people in your Network about the companies where they work. They will have inside knowledge about the corporate culture, compensation and career opportunities

Research all of your picks. You can find salary trends, employee ratings, better business bureau comments, financial strength, etc.

Network – The value of your network cannot be overstated. Your network will provide leads, references and many time actual jobs. There are many tools out there, but my favorite is LinkedIn. It will help you identify and keep track of your network. It will also help people identify you as part of their network. If you are not already a member (basic membership is free), you should join now. Regardless of the tool you use, you should consider the following:

Include friends, family, current and former coworkers, teachers/professors, etc.

Let everyone in your network know you are looking for a job (more is more).

Leverage you network to get interviews at your target companies.

Leverage your network to put in a “good word” when you are interviewing at their company.

Your network is your best source for references – use them.

Remember to reciprocate (don’t ask others to do what you would not do yourself).

“Anti-Networking” – check you social network sites to ensure there is nothing that will come back to haunt you.

Job Search Boards: I sometimes feel as if there are millions of job search boards. Of course there aren’t, but there are lots. You could easily get sucked in to spending all of your time searching and applying for jobs found on job search sites. This is not a good use of your time. Pick a few sites that are highly rated or meet your needs and balance the time you spend on job search boards against other resources (recruiters, your target companies and your network). Some boards are very useful and current while others have mostly outdated &/or non-existent jobs. It is not always easy to tell which sites are the worst, but there is level of consistency in terms of the top rated boards. Best to consider:

Look for articles that rank the top job boards

Use job boards that focus on your industry/field and location

Use “saved searches” to alert you of matching jobs

You should not have to pay for a job search board

General “Rules of the Road”:

Look for jobs at or above your level (and salary). If you aim low, you will most likely wind up with a boring job with less pay.

Remember to allocate your time across all sources (recruiters, companies, job search boards and your network).

Use my “one a day” rule (so little time, so many job applications)

Today is the first day of the rest of your job search – don’t squander it!

Good luck in your search.
R. R. Tolkien

Online marketing is a career opportunity that’s hot and growing hotter. Among them, social media marketing is currently one of the biggest career opportunities in online marketing. People with knowledge or experience in online marketing can find marketing jobs in such areas as brand managers, email marketers, search engine marketers, and media planners. When it comes to marketing jobs in Maryland, urban areas such as Baltimore offer a number of openings from entry-level to management.

“When it comes to online marketing jobs, most employers will prefer a mixture of education and relevant work experience”, says Oliver Feakins, CEO of Web Talent Marketing. “Since the tactics that are used by online marketers change with technology trends, gaining credible knowledge through a degree program in online marketing can be a challenge. Some of the best Internet marketers in the world are self-instructed professionals. Entry to midlevel online marketing jobs may require experience in online marketing and companies may choose an experienced candidate over someone fresh out of college. However, most executive level online marketing jobs will require both a college degree and several years of Internet marketing experience. To prepare yourself for an online marketing position at any level, job seekers should study online marketing tactics while obtaining some level of college. Having both bases covered will make you more desirable and better qualified to be offered an online marketing job.”

And the foundations of that experience include being tech savvy, being familiar with social media such as Facebook, Twitter, and Google+, and maintaining a blog. Experts suggested volunteer positions or internships as an excellent way to home Internet marketing skills that could lead to better jobs. You can also develop personal experience for a Baltimore marketing job by monetizing your own blog.

The Online Marketing Certification Program provides certification in various areas such as SEO, social media, conversion, PPC, and web analytics. Some colleges and universities also offer degree programs in online marketing. Certification is not required, but may be helpful.

Online marketing professionals enjoy a wide variety of responsibilities, from new product launches to moving websites higher in search results. Creative tasks include content management, website design and optimization, and site promotions. Analytical tasks include working with site statistics, analyzing and improving conversion rates, and media planning.

A marketing employment agency will have the expertise to match your qualifications and interests to the job you need. As a general rule, the best job openings are often listed only with agencies, and not advertised to the general public. A marketing employment agency offers employers a convenient way to pre-screen applicants, while providing applicants with quality options.

In the fast-growing field of online marketing, there are companies that make incredible offers, such as ” Work at home for $97 an hour!” Or they are looking for people to harvest email addresses for spam purposes. Working with a marketing employment agency will protect you from these types of “opportunities”.

According to projections by the Maryland Department of Planning, job openings in information and professional and technical services will grow approximately 25% over the next 30 years. During that same period, jobs in retail and manufacturing are expected to diminish by 20-25%.

You may already have the skills and knowledge to become a part of this exciting career field. A marketing employment agency can direct you to the best marketing jobs in Maryland.

“A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step.” – Lao Tzu

As far as careers go Gunsmithing is a highly specialized field. Typically it is those who appreciate firearms, use them, and take care of them that find a career in gunsmithing rewarding. There are several roads to success, all of them long. One option is to pursue a vocational certificate or degree through colleges offering programs in gunsmithing, another is to find a sponsored apprenticeship, or some combination of both. Regardless of how one starts out his or her education in gunsmithing it is during the apprenticeship where knowledge begins to transform into experience.

For an apprentice gunsmith It can be many years before he or she can make a living working on firearms. Due to the variances in laws from city to city, county to county, and state to state, as well as significant anti-gun legislation; many places have seen increased difficulty in obtaining a Federal Firearms Permit (FFP). Without an FFP, operating a small business for gunsmithing is impossible. Due to the decreasing availability and demand for firearms the market has shrunk.

The market shrinkage is also due to manufacturing efficiency and growth. As firearms producers offer better warranties and service, including customization and modification services, the role of the small business gunsmith is greatly reduced, relegated primarily to the restoration of older and antique guns. The shrinking demand for gunsmiths has created a specialty market. Custom parts and guns from a master gunsmith can be worth quite a large sum, especially in places such as England where custom firearms are collected as art. Sadly, the specialty market is small and difficult to break into, and most will never reach the level of expertise and artistry needed to make a living as a gunsmith.

Though there is a decline in privately owned gunsmith shops, career opportunities are available for aspiring gunsmiths. Many sporting goods stores, law enforcement agencies, the military and firearms manufacturers employ gunsmiths. Sporting good stores assist hunters and gun enthusiasts in maintaining the quality of their firearm and customers are often loyal in their patronage to said store. Law enforcement armories will need gunsmiths as well in order to ensure the safety and reliability of their firearms. As firearms manufacturing grows, the demand for experts who can meet the repair and modification demands placed on the manufacturer will increase.

Gunsmithing is going through a difficult period of time at the moment, trying to remain relevant in the face of big business encroachment and a general decline in demand for firearms. There are facets of gunsmithing that will remain in need or grow in demand as time moves on, such as the market for gun collectors. The importance of proper care and maintenance requires trained individuals, and as such there will always be a demand in law enforcement and the military. Though it may seem that gunsmithing is trending toward a hobbyists’ pursuit, the skills and knowledge of a gunsmith are crucial when it comes to law and order.

Have you ever considered moving overseas for a job? If the answer’s ‘no’ you’re closing yourself off to loads of job opportunities.

Of course, you may have good reason for declining any international job offers – one of the most common ones being close family connections within the UK that you don’t feel you can break or budgetary limitations. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with this, but if you are free to move away from your home country you should definitely be widening the net on your job searches.

The West has long been thought of as being home to the leading locations for IT work, with the United States having topped the annual industry report by the Economist Intelligence Unit year on year. The UK also has a strong base of IT companies thanks to large cities with a focus on digital media such as Manchester and London, but if you’re thinking about moving overseas for work you should definitely consider Asia.

A number of Asian countries snuck further up the list this year than ever before, which means that the East is slowly catching up with the West. Singapore, for instance, ranked in third place this year, making it one of the best countries in the entire world for employment within the IT sector.

Many of the best software producers either have their headquarters in Singapore or at least a branch in the country. Singapore is increasingly becoming home to some huge IT companies, such as IBM and Dimension Data, while also having new IT businesses springing up all over the place, calling for increased demand in qualified IT personnel.

If you’re searching for Singapore IT jobs but are coming up empty handed, don’t worry. All you need is the help of a professional who can give you the assistance you need in your job searches – this is where a recruitment agent can take over and complete all of the job applications for you.

However, moving overseas for work does pose a few difficulties; most notably the language barrier. You should never relocate to another country without first attempting to pick up some of the basics in terms of language, although knowing about the culture as well will go a long way to improving your stay there!

Never make such a drastic move without thinking it through first, as once you’ve signed your work contract it would look very bad if you turned tail and ran back to the UK. As long as you’re certain that it’s what you want you’re guaranteed to enjoy a new life and career in Singapore.

To keep your balance, you must keep moving.” – Albert Einstein

When it comes to IT sales jobs, you may be thinking that you will simply be in a call centre selling a service over the phone; on the contrary, there are many roles within IT sales that could be of interest to those seeking a challenging and rewarding career. If you are looking to kick start your career, the following options could be the ideal solution for a satisfying role that continues to keep you motivated for the years ahead.

Business to Business Sales Representative

Business to Business, also known as B2B provides a product or service to another business rather than individuals. This can be a great opportunity to meet many industry professionals and travel around to businesses across the country and potentially beyond in order to discuss your company’s product or service with them.

Account Manager

Considerable experience in IT sales could mean you are now ready to take the next step and start to look after a number of accounts held by the company. This role can encompass a range of skills and duties, from ensuring a monthly strategy is carried out for the customer to selling any new products or services that could be of benefit, as well as following up hot leads from a sales advisor to secure an on-going contract.

IT Sales Executive

Taking the step up from representative or advisor to executive often opens the door to a wide range of potential. With effective management training, you could find yourself heading up your own team, overseeing sales and setting targets to boost performance and morale as well as reporting back to the MD on a regular basis. Important sales opportunities will often be handled by you to maximise the potential of securing a continuous contract.

IT Sales Support

You needn’t be on the front line when it comes to sales roles as there are many ways in which you can aid with the selling of a product or service. In a supporting role, you could be preparing and sending quotes as well as arranging meetings, liaising with distributors and diary management. A support role can be ideal for those who do not feel a direct sales job is for them.

There are many paths that an IT sales job could take you down, so why not go online and discover them in further detail or get in touch with a recruitment agency specialising in this area for a list of current vacancies in your area.

Sophie has written many articles on recruitment for both employees and employers, offering advice and information on all manner of work related topics with a special interest in IT sales recruitment.

There are numerous aspiring candidates who are in search of an accounting job in the present employment market. However, to compete against other potential candidates and to highlight your skills, you need to have a perfect résumé. These days, it is easy to find an online sample accounting résumé or a cover letter. Although the internet is an amazing resource to find a sample résumé, you may not find a perfect one to follow. So here are few tips for you if you are looking forward to learn the steps of creating a winning résumé in the accounting field.

Classifying the Accounting Skills:
Accounting is a vast field that comprises of a number of subjects. A student usually takes up few subjects and specializes in one. Hence, while crafting a résumé, it is essential to classify the accounting skills and highlight your proficiency level. Whether it is taxation, financial accounting or the accounting information systems that you are good at, include each one of these categories and describe your capabilities and skill levels. If you have obtained a professional degree like a masters in accounting or financial accounting, then consider including such information in your résumé as well.

Highlight Your Job Experiences:
It is very important to showcase your job experience in your accounting résumé. Whether you had worked as a part-time or full-time accountant, include that in your résumé and consider even highlighting your skills. You can include your knowledge in specific categories such as management, organizing and supervising. Also add your post in that company such as a cashier, accountant, financial consultant or a trainee.

Summarize Technical Skills:
As your résumé should showcase your job experience, it should also highlight your technical skills. You can include your computer knowledge, degrees, capabilities and proficiency in Microsoft Office, Net-App, Access and QuickBooks. This is a best way to demonstrate your skills and make your résumé to stand out of the crew.

Underline Honors and Leadership Abilities:
Your résumé should also include the information on your past supervising and team-building activities in case you have taken part in any such events. If you have served as a volunteer, or an officer of a sports club or team, then add all such information to your résumé. Including such information in your résumé will help you to showcase your leadership skills and teamwork knowledge. Also, consider including the information about any recognition and honors if you have received any.

Include Hobbies and Volunteer Details:
Although your hobbies won’t have to do anything with your job, by including them in your résumé, you will illustrate an overview of your likes and dislikes. You can list out some relevant and interesting hobbies and also make a note of all the volunteer activities that you had participated in and include them in your résumé. Such areas showcase your leadership skill, team building and field-networking knowledge.

Add Social Media Networks:
Lastly, you should also consider including your professional profiles in social media networks such as LinkedIn and Facebook. If you have a Skype Messenger account, you can also list it in your CV.

Congratulations, now you’ll be one step ahead of the job market by implementing these winning résumé tip.

So when you look for job opportunities, do you just do a search based on job openings or do you have a “list”? If you are now thinking “what list?” then this post is for you. So, just like today’s quote, getting the right job is worth doing right. Part of your plan for job search should include making a list of companies where you would like to work. Not to say that you should only consider the companies on your preferred company list, but the list should form a large part of your foundation for job search. Of course, lots of work goes into coming up with your preferred list. Today’s post is a first in series of “Top Pick” lists and will help with some of your research.

The Best Companies to Work For – If you are a long time reader of CareerAlley then you will have seen some of my posts on Fortune’s “100 Best Companies to Work For“. For the most part, no matter what your field, you should be able to find some companies from this list to add to your list. And, according to Fortune’s summary, these companies have (collectively) over 150,000 jobs to be filed. So, to help you with your research:

The Full List – The full list can be found at this link. Each company has an embedded link which will take you to a summary page listing why they are considered one of the “Best” along with a link to their website (always look for “careers” when you are on a company website).

Jobs at the Best Companies to Work For – Powered by SimplyHired.com, this is a job search focused specifically on the Best Companies List. You can modify your search by using the criteria boxes at the top or the criteria to the left of the page.

Best Companies Near You – This link allows you to select the best companies near you. Use the drop down box to put in your state.

The Fortune 500 – This is the annual list of America’s largest companies. Now big may not be your thing, but if it is, this is a great list to start with. In terms of industries and locations, this list is more diversified given the number of companies on the list. From retail to oil to telecommunications to financial services, I’m sure your industry is represented on the list. And, according to the article, the top 100 have over 96,000 job opportunities!

FORTUNE 500 best companies to work for – This list is a cross reference between the Best Companies list and the Fortune 500 (in case you are looking for the best largest companies). If you like big, then go for the best as well.

Industries – You can use this list to cross check your industry and pick companies that better represent your interests.

A Fortune 500 Company Near You – Like the Best Companies, this list provides the largest companies by location. Use the drop down box to put in your state.

Jobs at the Fortune 500 – Also powered by SimplyHired.com, this is a job search focused specifically on the Fortune 500 List.
Other Ways to Conduct Research – If the two lists above do not meet your needs (or you just want additional resources), the following links should help in your list building:

LinkedIn Company Directory – This is LinkedIn’s directory of companies listed by industry. The list starts with an alpha listing followed by the actual industries. Click on a category and this will lead to a full page for that industry based on location. Click through to find your companies. Click on any company for background and associated links.

Vault.com Company Listing – A very different format from LinkedIn, but an amazing amount of information is available on this site (way too much to discuss here).
