So throw off the bowlines, Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream.” - Mark Twain

Individual job search can be challenging (regardless of why you are searching for a new job), but group job search (as in a downsizing, closing of a location or closing of a company) takes the challenge to a new level. Of course there are a number of factors that potentially increase the pressure, like when an entire industry is under pressure or if the overall economy is suffering. Everyone, of course, handles the job search pressure differently. Some people don’t actually look for a job until after their last day (denial) while others jump in with both feet and do the all out job search with a goal of finding a new job before their current job ends. Everyone needs to approach the process in the job search in their own way and time, but panic is not a good way to start.

Having lived through events described above several times (unfortunately), I’ve learned that you need to be flexible (and careful) in the way you handle your future compensation. There is sometimes a fear that you will never get another job and this may lead you to take a role for significantly less than you are currently paid (or potentially worth). On the other hand, “holding out” for a level of compensation that may no longer be realistic can also backfire. So what is the right balance between what you are really worth and what the market will pay? That, my friend, is the topic of today’s post.

What am I worth? – The first thing you want to try and understand is “what you are worth” and there are many tools that will help you do that. I must caution, however, that these tools only offer guidance as your exact set of circumstances (years of experience, education, type of experience, current economic trends, etc.) play a major role in determining compensation.

Salary.com – Stands to reason that this is a good place to start. This site has two views, one for employers and one for personal use. You can register on the site or just use there tools without registering. There are links at the top of the page for Salary and Job Search or use the free Salary Wizard available left center page. Enter your title and location on the Personal Salary Wizard. Entering your information will return a basic report. There are additional tools below this for Job Search, Education and Cost of Living. Additionally, there are a number of other related tools under the Tools menu.

Jobnob.com – The site allows you to search for average salaries as well as see job listings for companies that are currently hiring. There are lists of companies, jobs and salary ranges. There are tabs at the top for Search, Salaries and Events. Clicking on Salaries shows ranges by profession. Enter your profession and the site will return a report. The Companies tab (down a little from the tabs at the top) is also interesting and provides a fair amount of data. Overall, the site is jam packed with some really good information (and you can search for jobs on the site as well).

SalaryExpert.com – Similar to Salary.com, this site has sections for both individuals and compensation professionals. The site offers both salary reports and cost of living reports (useful if you are thinking of a move) as well as job search. Also like Salary.com, there are free basic reports and custom reports for a fee. Clicking “continue” under Employee (center page) returns a page with a Salary Calculator, Executive Salary Calculator and a Cost of Living Calculator. There are additional tabs at the top of the page for Reports and Education.

Should I take a cut in compensation? – This is a great question and is asked all of the time (as you will see from some of the links below). This is, of course, a personal decision. But you should be well informed (can you afford it, were you “overpaid” before, is the job in a less expensive market, etc.). Hopefully the following articles will help.

Should I Accept A Job Offer Below My Current Pay Range? – This article is from Timsstrategy.com and it offers some great advice. Take a look at Tim’s Pros and Cons (you should be making your list as well). But also take a look at his five factors for consideration. Again, it is a personal choice driven by many factors, but think long and hard on this one.

Should You Accept that Lousy Job Offer? Yes – Another view, this one posted on the CBS News site. I don’t actually agree that it is as cut and dry as the last paragraph would lead you to believe. But, that being said, personal circumstances combined with market conditions for your profession will provide the best answer for you.

Good luck in your search.

I was at a party the other night and one of my friends was telling me about the current estate tax laws and personal trusts. Something about limited exclusions on estate tax so, he says “You can put $10 million in one of these trusts to limit your estate tax liability”. Now I’m thinking “$10 million? Maybe $10 thousand, but who has millions?”. Estate tax is not something I will need to worry about, but it’s all relative. What about you? Do you have “wallet envy”? Do you think you are paid what you are worth? Maybe you don’t even know what you should be paid given your experience, location and job. This is something that you really should know. While it’s not an exact science, you should be able t get a good view of your salary range.

How to Get the Job and the Salary You Want

Now that you’re finding ready to be hired for your 1st job, maybe you’re thinking about how you may get the job and also the salary you would like. In this article, we present hints on how you may get pleasure from the compensation you prefer.

1. Do your homework. Find out what the business pays for the position you are applying for. The rate can depend not merely on the position but also on the applicant’s experience and on the location the company is based. Just before you submit your job application, you should already know what to expect.

2. Don’t give an exact amount. Generally, job seekers are asked within the application

about their expected salary. In the course of the interview, the hiring officer may possibly once more ask you about your salary requirement. How will need to you answer the question? The vital thing to keep in mind is that you ought to by no means give an exact amount of your salary expectation.

The reason? In case you give out an amount that is too low, the hiring officer might believe that you aren’t confident about your abilities. On the other hand, for those who give a salary that’s too high, the employer may perhaps think that the company can’t afford your services.

In the event you truly must say a quantity, give a compensation range based on your investigation. Be sure that the minimum amount of salary you give could be a quantity you could be pleased with in the event you get hired.

3. Never lie. Be careful not to give false particulars given that it will be so uncomplicated to verify the facts and if the hiring officer finds out that you simply were not telling the truth, it could be a key reason why your application gets rejected. Obviously, no employer wants to hire a worker that can’t be trusted.

4. Always negotiate for a better deal. In case you are already hired and your employer speaks to you about a salary enhance, don’t take the very first offer you. Instead, attempt to negotiate your way for a superior deal. This will show that you are confident about your capabilities and what you’ll be able to do for the organization. Try to ask for at least 10% greater salary than the initial offer. If your employer tells you that it’s not feasible, then that’s the time you’ll be able to accept the raise. You can also request your employer to evaluate your performance right after a few months and give you a raise based on that.

5. Take advantage of your benefits. If a raise is not achievable at this point, attempt to arrange for other benefits. For example, you are able to request for an additional flexible work schedule or you may request to have at least one day when you can work from residence. A lot of firms these days implement telecommuting so it shouldn’t be hard to arrange for the deal. So long as what you are asking for is reasonable, your employer is a lot most likely to give in to your request, especially in case you are considered as an asset within the business.

“Do you know the difference between education and experience? Education is when you read the fine print; experience is what you get when you don’t.” – Pete Seeger

There are times in your career when your loyalty to your employer and your enthusiasm and dedication to your job are put to the test – and one of them is when you discover, either accidentally or otherwise, that a new hire with less experience than you is being paid much more than you. This discovery stings very sharply, and if you’ve ever been at the receiving end of it, you know it’s hard to ever feel the same about your employer again, no matter how cordial and even enjoyable your working relations have been in the past.

The truth of the matter is that almost every organization in the world is forced to raise salaries for new hires in order to keep up with external market rates. While it would seem that the fair thing to do would be to hike the salaries of those who have more experience and have been with the company a good many years, it’s often not done because of financial constraints and other factors. And so every experienced employee faces this unpalatable situation at some point or the other of their career, and they’re left with two choices – they can stay silent and accept their situation without kicking up a fuss, or can talk to their employer openly about it and ask for a pay hike. The second option could again lead to one of two things – your request is accepted and you’re given a raise, or it is denied. And if you’re denied the raise, then you have two choices yet again – quit your job and find a new one, or stay on even though you’re now disgruntled and disillusioned with the system and the unfairness of it all.

If you don’t get a raise, your initial reaction fueled by the adrenaline of righteous indignation is to throw in the towel and quit – however, if your livelihood is dependent on your job and you don’t have other offers pouring in, then the solution is not as cut and dried as it would seem. If you stay back, you also have to face the fact that you’re always going to feel as if your employers are taking you for granted and that you’re not being valued as a loyal and long-time employee. And if you’re in a senior position and required to train and guide the newcomers who earn much more than you do, it’s a pretty awkward situation that could lead to some uncomfortable and even antagonistic moments.

There’s no one-size-fits-all solution to this problem, and the decision to be made lies on your individual circumstances and your frame of mind. However, there are a few factors that can make your choice a little easier:

If you have a better job option, take it after researching it thoroughly – you don’t want to jump from the fat into the fire.

If you think you can find better options, stay on at your present job even as you keep looking out for a new one – there’s no sense in quitting before you’ve lined up some security for your future.

If you don’t find anything else, find a way to stay on at your job and also get something in the bargain – if your work record is exemplary and if your organization thinks you’re too valuable to let go, they may be willing to compromise a little and give you a raise in a month or so; so negotiate a deal with your boss, and use your brains to work things out to your advantage.

Problems at work are bound to crop up every now and then – if you’re aware of their possibility and prepared to deal with them, you don’t really have to worry too much when they do happen.

Are you underpaid? Do you think you are paid what you are worth, given your experience and compared to others you work with? If you are like most of us, the answer is probably that you think you are underpaid. Taking that to the next level (and being realistic), how much do you really think you’re worth? We all get our raises, bonuses and promotions from time to time, but the best opportunity to increase your compensation is when you are moving from one company to the next. Even then, there is a limit as to what a new company will pay you above and beyond what you currently earn. But when that big day comes, and you get that job offer, how do you know they are offering you what you are worth?

I’m not saying that it will be easy to switch careers, but it is certainly possible. Okay, you’ve made your decision, so what’s the next step?

There are some good ideas here (like joining the professional society that covers your new career). Each step is followed by a short paragraph and I’m sure you can find additional information on these topics on the internet. There are some career related links on the right hand side of the page.

This link, from Careeroverview.com, provides lists of careers on the left hand side of the page, with salaries by occupation on the right hand side of the page.

“Welcome to the jungle, It gets worse here everyday, Ya learn ta live like an animal, In the jungle where we play” – Guns N’ Roses

If you’ve been looking for a job for any length of time you will know exactly what I mean. Of course most of us would not survive for very long in a real jungle with all those venomous snakes, spiders and the like. Although to be honest, not many jungle villagers would last very long on the streets of New York either. But just like the jungle, there times when the wrong move could be life threatening (metaphorically speaking of course).

So imagine, after many long months of looking for a job, interviewing, talking to countless headhunters and getting so close you were sure “this is the one”, you finally get a job offer. Maybe you’ve been out of work for awhile or maybe you still have a job, it does not matter. But when you get that “offer”, you have no clue whether it is a fair offer, a great offer or they are taking advantage of you. Sure, you always have that “number” in your head. You know, the one that would put a big smile on your face (but no one is going to offer you a million dollars). Then there is the “bottom line” number, the one below which you would just walk away. But what is your “real” number? What is the total compensation number you need to get so that you are paid what you are worth? Like most of us, you probably don’t really know what you are worth. So what can you do about it? Read on.

Know your worth in the job market – This article, posted on Marketplace, provides a few pointers and links to help you do the research. Like anything else on the internet, you need to be diligent in your research and check a few different sources. You are likely to get a range of numbers, but in the end you will get a reasonable feel for what you are worth.

Getting Paid What You’re Worth in a Challenging Job Market – This article is from cbsalary.com also provides some pointers on getting what you are paid worth. From tips like “be confident” to ways to improve your worth (training), the article provides some good tips. But that is not all! At the top of the page are links for Salary Calculator, Salary Tools and Salary Advice, so take a look at these while you are on the site.

Salary Tools:

Salary.com – This is a good site to start in your quest for your worth. The top part of the page has the usual job search engine along with featured jobs. Right below this is a salary wizard. Put in your job title (or the title you are interviewing for) and zip code and off you go. Since there tends to be so many names for certain jobs, you may need to try a few to get what you need. Like many sites, there is the “free tool” (I always go for the free stuff) or the “pay for info” tool (this is a personal choice).

PayScale.com – Another good site to check your worth is PayScale.com. Their tag line of “Get a Free Salary Report based on your job title, location, education, skills and experience” sounds good (again, free is good). Select Job Candidate or Job Seeker (the descriptions are there for you to choose) and you are on your way to your magic number.

Salary Information from CollegeGrad.com – CollegeGrad.com also offers a salary wizard. Click the link at the start of this paragraph to get to the wizard. Enter your job title (or click “all titles” to the right), enter your zip code or state/metro area and click search.

“I can’t complain but sometimes I still do. Life’s been good to me so far” – Joe Walsh

It’s human nature to complain. Some people are really good at always seeing the positive side of things while others are always thinking that every silver lining has a cloud. Most of us fall smack in the middle. So when was the last time you complained about the company you work for? Would your view of your company change if you were out of work (and a job was available at your company)? We all do it (complain about our companies that is). So what would you change at your company to make it a great place to work? That is a little bit about why the “best companies to work for” are on the list (and many of them show up on the list year after year). So the next time you have something negative to say about your company, think about what would make it better and put it in the suggestion box.

Container Store – Number 36 on the list, the Container Store has been on the Best list for 11 years in a row and while they decreased staff by 9% last year, they are hiring again this year. Their main careers page is mostly a company overview with a number of informational links on the right-hand side (Navigate Your Career) and a link to their Career Center is at the bottom of this list. From the Career Center, you can register, view current job openings, post your resume and keep track of your job submissions. Select “View Positions” to link to search page which is divided by job type (Stores, Distribution Center, Home Office and Customer Solutions). There were lots of new jobs when I checked the site.

Aflac – Ranked 37 and also in their 11th year on the list (down from 26), I’m sure the first thing you think of is the duck from the commercial (and if you haven’t seen it I don’t know where you’ve been hiding). This insurer is based in Georgia and has almost 4,400 employees (down from last year). Their career site has a series of career related links on the left hand side of the page with “Search for Job Opportunities” and “College Recruiting center page. From “Search for Job Opportunities” you can create a profile, save searches, manage your job submissions, register and, of course, search jobs.

Scooter Store – Not on the list last year, Scooter is ranked 38 on this year’s list. According to their website, Scooter is “America’s leading supplier of scooters and power chairs for people with limited mobility”. Their careers page is well done, with links at the top of the page for related sites followed by an excellent overview of the company. A careers overview is center page, and you can click on Search Jobs from the top of the page or on the left hand side of the page. You can join the careers site or just search for jobs. There were approximately 60 job opportunities when I checked the page.

TDIndustries – Ranked 39, this company is a construction company and is based in Dallas, Texas. Jobs increased by 7% last year and now stands slightly below 1,600 employees. Their careers page improved quite a bit from last year and has an excellent overview center page. There are links on the left hand side of the page for related topics. Click on “Job Openings” from the left hand side of the page to link to the job search page (last year there was no search function. There were 17 job openings as of mid-January.

Scripps Health – Up from Number 59 on last year’s list, Scripps has over 11,000 employees and hired over 1,300 people last year (amazing). Their career site offers information on the company as well as specific information on a number of health care related fields. There are related links on the left hand side of the page as well as “Hot Careers” center page. Click search jobs to link to the log on page, where you can register and post your resume. The bottom left hand side of the page has a “search openings” link. There were over 302 job opportunities when I checked the site.

Good luck in your search.
It is never too late to re-think your career, but if you are going to take the plunge and completely change what you are doing, you really need to be prepared. There are degrees of commitment to changing careers. Maybe you don’t want to switch from being a concert promoter to a Monk, but even if you just want to change slightly you should do your homework. Today’s post focuses on finding the best jobs.

10 Steps to a Successful Career Change – The first thing you will want to do if you are making a career change is to make a plan. This article, from About.com, provides (you guessed it) 10 steps that you should consider before you make that change. From “Evaluate your current job satisfaction” to “Consider alternative roles”, the article provides some basic tips on where to start and what to consider. There are related articles on career change at the bottom of the page that are also worth a read.

High Paying Careers – Now I don’t want to say that you are just in it for the money, but we all have to eat and why not eat well? While money shouldn’t drive your choice of career, it is certainly a consideration for most of us. This article, from money-zine.com, provides a whole bunch of lists with the career choice and average salary. The article shows a few lists like the “top 10″ and “Highest Paying Jobs in IT”. What about your current job? Don’t forget to take a look at Worth Your Weight in Gold? Know Your Bottom Line and “You Want to Pay me What?“.

Now everything is relative (as Paul Simon would say “One man’s ceiling is another man’s floor”), so while you may have a different view, you should still take a look at this list (and apologies if your job is on the list). CNBC.com provides this list, which is a series of pictures with brief descriptions of what make these the worst jobs.

As luck would have it, CNBC.com also has a list of the best jobs (in the same format as the worst jobs). An interesting list, as as you would expect, Health Care and Accountants appear on the list. Now one that really surprised me was Historian. In addition to brief overviews, the article also provides the median salary.

From “build and manage your network lovingly” to “Create a powerful brand online”, this article is worth a read.
The posts over the next few days are about focusing on the source of jobs – companies. Yes, headhunters, job search sites and networking are all great ways to get a job, but let’s face it – all of the jobs are with companies. So I figured, why not start at the source for a few days? So stop dreaming about success and let’s get to work!

What are Company Career Websites?

Most major firms have a company website with a “careers” or “job seekers” section typically on the first page of their website. Most will allow you to search for open positions and post your resume. There tends to be a higher “hit” rate on company websites (assuming there is a reasonable match between your resume and the job requirements).

Tips:

Use web resources to look for companies in your industry (or industries that interest you) such as Fortune Magazine’s “Fortune 1000“. The list lets you view the Fortune 1000 by various categories (companies, industry, best companies to work for, etc.).

Do research on the company prior to posting your resume or applying for a job (sites like vault.com).

Know your worth. Look at listings in the job websites that are similar to your current position (or positions that interest you) to see what salary is listed. New sites, such as glassdoor.com are also useful to get insight on companies and compensation.

Financial Services Company Career Sites:

Blackstone – Blackstone is a well known asset management company. After giving a very good overview of the company, the left-hand side of the site provides the full range of hire types, from Internships through Experienced Hires. You can easily browse the open positions as well as register for the site. There were 10 job opportunities when I checked the site.

JP Morgan Chase – Similar to the other sites, this site gives an overview of the company and then has links for Experienced Hires and University Programs. There is a link for “Jobs in Demand” as well as a “Search Jobs” tab. As with the other sites, it is worthwhile to register. There were over 4,000 job opportunities when I checked the site.

HSBC – The HSBC career page starts off with a map of the world, you click where you want to work (or where you live) and then the site takes you to a more focused view for your region and country. The site includes “Tips & Guidelines” for candidate preparation as well as job search, recruiting events, career development and areas of opportunity. There were 250 job opportunities when I checked the site.

Citigroup – Their careers page has two main segments – Professional Job Search and Graduate Recruitment. Focusing on the Professional Job Search, there is a choice of four regions (and your language choice). Click on the region of your choice and select Go. Once there, you will see a brief overview in the center of the page with several choices on the left hand side of the screen (Job Search, Build Your Profile and Graduates & Undergraduates). The right hand side of the screen has links to the different businesses within Citigroup. There were 1,280 job opportunities globally when I checked the site.

Bank of New York Mellon Corporation – A leading asset management and securities services company, and headquartered in New York, The Bank of New York Mellon over $960 billion in assets under management. Their career page has a brief overview center page, with links on the left for jobs, areas of interest, college recruiting and more. Click “Search for BNY Mellon Jobs” to link to their jobs search page. There were 523 job opportunities when I checked the site.
