C. Forbes

America needs truck drivers. Most truck driving jobs don’t require a degree, but they do require specialized training and specific licensing. In the current economic climate, jobs in many sectors are scarce. But if you’re willing to make some compromises, you may be able to quickly and easily find a job driving a truck.

Truck driving is one of the most important jobs in our country. Every item you find in a grocery store was brought in on a truck. When you buy a new car, you can bet it was brought to the dealership on a truck. The gas you pump into your car is transported by truck. Our everyday lives are affected—and made easier—by truck drivers.

In addition to all those goods that are moved through many states, new discoveries of oil in areas like North Dakota are increasing the demand to transport oil to other parts of the country. The need to transport oil and gasoline is constant, so these types of trucking jobs are almost always available.
Aside from the satisfaction of getting consumer goods where they need to go, a lot of truck drivers earn respectable incomes. In some cases, truck drivers are paid by the mile, so there’s incentive to drive longer and farther, while adhering to truck driving time limits put in place for safety. But some industries pay salaries. It takes a little homework to find the type of truck driving job you feel would suit your needs.

Anyone considering a career as a truck driver must keep a few things in mind. It’s a job that requires long hours, sometimes driving 10 to 12 hours a day. It may require being away from home for weeks at a time, which can also mean missing out on family events and even holidays. There are also risks involved with driving large, heavy trucks on the interstate. Truck accidents aren’t as common as car accidents, but they can be much more deadly and devastating. Truck accident statistics show that because of the long hours, driver fatigue is a common cause of trucking accidents, more so than weather or other factors.

If truck driving still appeals to you, you can find dozens of driving schools all across the country that will provide the training and certification you need to get behind the wheel, and embark on a new career.

Noble McIntyre is the senior partner and owner of McIntyre Law, a firm comprised of experienced Oklahoma truck accident attorneys, and a full team of legal professionals.

Good luck in your search.

So when you look for job opportunities, do you just do a search based on job openings or do you have a “list”? If you are now thinking “what list?” then this post is for you. So, just like today’s quote, getting the right job is worth doing right. Part of your plan for job search should include making a list of companies where you would like to work. Not to say that you should only consider the companies on your preferred company list, but the list should form a large part of your foundation for job search. Of course, lots of work goes into coming up with your preferred list. Today’s post is a first in series of “Top Pick” lists and will help with some of your research.

The Best Companies to Work For – If you are a long time reader of CareerAlley then you will have seen some of my posts on Fortune’s “100 Best Companies to Work For“. For the most part, no matter what your field, you should be able to find some companies from this list to add to your list. And, according to Fortune’s summary, these companies have (collectively) over 150,000 jobs to be filed. So, to help you with your research:

The Full List – The full list can be found at this link. Each company has an embedded link which will take you to a summary page listing why they are considered one of the “Best” along with a link to their website (always look for “careers” when you are on a company website).

Jobs at the Best Companies to Work For – Powered by SimplyHired.com, this is a job search focused specifically on the Best Companies List. You can modify your search by using the criteria boxes at the top or the criteria to the left of the page.

Best Companies Near You – This link allows you to select the best companies near you. Use the drop down box to put in your state.

The Fortune 500 – This is the annual list of America’s largest companies. Now big may not be your thing, but if it is, this is a great list to start with. In terms of industries and locations, this list is more diversified given the number of companies on the list. From retail to oil to telecommunications to financial services, I’m sure your industry is represented on the list. And, according to the article, the top 100 have over 96,000 job opportunities!

FORTUNE 500 best companies to work for – This list is a cross reference between the Best Companies list and the Fortune 500 (in case you are looking for the best largest companies). If you like big, then go for the best as well.

Industries – You can use this list to cross check your industry and pick companies that better represent your interests.

A Fortune 500 Company Near You – Like the Best Companies, this list provides the largest companies by location. Use the drop down box to put in your state.

Jobs at the Fortune 500 – Also powered by SimplyHired.com, this is a job search focused specifically on the Fortune 500 List. You can modify your search by using the criteria boxes at the top or the criteria to the left of the page.

Other Ways to Conduct Research – If the two lists above do not meet your needs (or you just want additional resources), the following links should help in your list building:

LinkedIn Company Directory – This is LinkedIn’s directory of companies listed by industry. The list starts with an alpha listing followed by the actual industries. Click on a category and this will lead to a full page for that industry based on location. Click through to find your companies. Click on any company for background and associated links.

Vault.com Company Listing – A very different format from LinkedIn, but an amazing amount of information is available on this site (way too much to discuss here).

Good luck in your search.

So what exactly is an entry level job? According to Wikipedia (and this is an excerpt) – “An entry-level job is a job that is normally designed or designated for recent graduates of a given discipline, and doesn’t ask for prior experience in the field or profession. These may require some on-site training.“. Now I’m not sure that is a perfect definition, because not all entry level jobs are for college grads. There are many entry level jobs for people who have not attended college or are college students. So how about this one from BusinessDictionary.com- “Bottom-level employment in a firm which usually requires ordinary-level of education, training, and experience qualifications. It gives a recruit the benefit of a gainful occupation, opportunity to learn and gain experience, and serves as a stepping-stone for higher-level jobs.“. Still doesn’t sound like the best definition but it is a better definition than the first one. Today’s post is about finding the best companies for entry level jobs (however they are defined).

Top Entry Level Employers – This is “the list” for entry level jobs from Collegegrad.com. The companies are ranked based on the estimated entry level hires. As an example, the 2011 #1 company is Enterprise Rent-a-car and their estimated project entry level hires is 8,500! Each company on the list has an embedded link to a page with more detail and the links back to the individual career pages. There are 93 companies on the list and thousands of jobs. While you are on the page, take a look at all of the related links for your career.

EntryLevelJobsite.com – This site is a job search site that focuses on entry level jobs (I’m sure you’ve figured that out by the name). There are tabs at the top of the site for Post Resume, Search Jobs and Career Resources. This is followed by a job search box, with advanced search and a job search directory to the right of the search box. Below this is a section for “Search Top Entry Level Jobs” on the left and recent job postings on the right hand side of the page. There were over 287,000 job opportunities posted when I checked the site.

Monster College – This is Monster.com’s recent college grad and entry level job site. Just click Search Entry-Level jobs, enter your criteria and you are on your way. Also on the site are resources like hiring and career trends. At the bottom of the page are additional links for internships, career advice and more.

10 High-Paying Entry-Level Jobs – If you are looking for an entry level job, you might as well look for a high paying job. This article, from AOL Jobs, lists the high paying entry level jobs (like $73,000 for investment banker). Each job has an embedded link to a page on that job type with tons of information, including a link for finding jobs for that job type. At the top of each of these pages are tabs where you can find out info such as salary, bonus and so much more. Worth a look.

50 Top Employers for College Grads – This article is from Business Week and provides a robust list of companies that are great for college grads. Click any picture to link to a page of information on the company. Each page includes key stats such as fields of study and personality types. The list of companies is diverse, from technology to hotels to accounting, there is bound to be a company that fits your needs.

Good luck in your search.

Back to basics with one of my more popular topics – targeted job search. Specifically, job search leads for specific industries. An the most popular of my popular posts is of course jobs in technology. So at first glance you might wonder why anyone would have to tell a technologist how or where to look for jobs on the Internet. But, you may be good at technology but that does not necessarily mean you know where to look for a job. And, like everything else in life, technology jobs come in all sizes and shapes. There are jobs at actual technology companies or tech jobs at non-tech companies. Today’s post focuses on the “not in the top ten tech companies” because sometimes size or popularity does not matter.

Some of the Companies you Know and Love:

Google -”Let’s work together” is the tag line for Google’s careers page. And, they have a pretty neat careers site (as you would expect). There are all of the stories about the difficult job interview process, but people do get hired. Top left hand side of the page has links to Joining Google and Life at Google (along with office locations). Center page is the job search function (key word, locations and categories). Browse by locations or visit their social media channels.

Apple – “Jobs at Apple – Part Career, part revolution” – the tag line on their careers page. Apple has been on the upswing for some time now, and they are admired on many fronts (with or without Steve – and we will miss him). A fairly simple page, which has Start Your Search at the top right hand side or select Retail or Corporate jobs center page. Clicking Search Jobs links to a job search engine (where you still need to select Retail or Corporate). You can register for the site or just search. A generic search returned 2,006 job opportunities in corporate and tons more in retail.

Some of the Other Companies you Know:

Intel – Intel is known for computer chips and their careers page is well put together. The left hand side of the page is filled with relevant links (like Job Search, Intern/Grad Opportunities, Student Center and so much more). The center of the page starts with a brief overview, followed by a quick Jobs Search box (below which are links for advanced search and recent grad/student searches). Bottom center page has a few targeted searches. The right hand side of the page has an enhanced applicant tool with an additional job search link. There were 677 job opportunities when I checked the site.

Cisco Systems – Cisco is known for network communications and their career site is fairly simple. The left hand side of the page has links for Featured Jobs, Search Jobs, Graduate & Intern Career Programs and more. There is also a small video you can play. The right hand side of the page has related links and search career opportunities at Cisco. There were 1,269 job opportunities when I checked the site.

Where to Find Technology Jobs: Not sure where you want to work? Check the link below.

CareerAlley Technology Job Search – Yes, my very own site (powered by SimplyHired), this will link you to a search of technology jobs on my job search site. You can further refine your search by using the companies, titles, location and job types on the left hand side of the page. You can also use the boxes at the top of the page.

Good luck in your search.

When I was growing up, I always wanted to be a performer (I guess we all did). I did the usual – playing in bands, acting and even majoring in music in college my first two years. For most of us “performer wannabees”, reality sets in a some point and we get a “real job”. But there are plenty of real jobs in the Entertainment Industry that don’t require you to perform (on stage that is). From traditional jobs like Finance and HR to industry specific jobs like stage manager or lighting director. Today’s post is all about finding those Entertainment jobs.

Entertainment Industry jobs – What better place to look than CareerAlley’s “Who’s Hiring” job search site (powered by SimplyHired)? The link at the start of this paragraph will take you to an “Entertainment” specific job search. Enter Location at the top of the page and adjust your search by tweaking the categories on the left hand side of the page (like Company, Title, etc.).

Entertainment Recruiters – This site helps you find recruiters who specialize in entertainment.

4entertainmentjobs.com – This search site is an industry specific site (Entertainment of course) and, according to their statistics, there are over 3,400 jobs in Entertainment on this site. Top right hand side of the page has a search engine where you enter your Job Category and Location (then click “Find my Dream Job”). Right below this is a list of some of the companies that look for candidates on this site. Featured jobs and employers are listed on the right hand side of the page and there is a link for entertainment internships on the right hand side of the page.

TheatreJobs.com – Another entertainment search site, this one specifically for (as I’m sure you’ve guessed) the Theatre. The top of the page has links for Search Jobs, Post Resumes, Auditions and more. Left side of the page has search jobs, with a list of categories and a place for your email address so that you can get notified. Middle of the page is Post Resumes and Promote Yourself while the right hand side of the page is a “browse auditions” section. There were 409 job opportunities when I checked the site.

Showbizjobs.com – “The Entertainment Professional’s Network” according to their tag line. Left hand side of the page is Search (pick you criteria) while the right hand side of the page allows Browsing (also pick your criteria). You can view featured jobs, list all companies and do a map search. There were over 800 job opportunities when I checked the site.

Entertainment Trade Magazines – Last, but not least, don’t forget trade magazines, where you may get some leads.

Variety.com – An old time mainstay, the online version version is a great source

Billboard.com – Music is the name of the game

Backstage.com – Broadway and more

Filmbiz.com

Good luck in your search.

The beauty of a “functional job” (like Technology, Finance, HR, etc.) is that you can either work for a company that specializes in what you do (Technology Companies, Financial Institutions, Executive Recruiters, etc.) OR you can practice your function within any company (most companies have IT, Finance and HR departments). If you are a “purist”, you probably want to work in a company that specializes in what you do, but either works (no pun intended). Today’s post will focus on both.

Technology Companies:

Google -Google has a pretty neat careers site (as you would expect). There are all of the stories about the difficult job interview process, but people do get hired. Top left hand side of the page has links to Joining Google and Life at Google. Center page is the job search function (key word, locations and categories). Browse by locations or visit their social media channels.

Apple – “Jobs at Apple – Part Career, part revolution” – the tag line on their careers page. Apple has been on the upswing for some time now, and they are admired on many fronts. A fairly simple page, which has Start Your Search at the top right hand side or select Retail or Corporate jobs center page. Clicking Search Jobs links to a job search engine (where you still need to select Retail or Corporate). You can register for the site or just search. A generic search returned 2,008 job opportunities when I checked the site.

Hewlett Packard – HP’s career website provides an overview of the company with links to Search Job and Submit your Profile at the bottom of the page. The right hand side of the page has “find your fit” where you can search for jobs or submit your profile. Their are separate tabs for Students & Graduates and Diversity. Searching all HP jobs returns over 9,108 opportunities with Information Technology returning 412 jobs (additional technical jobs can be found under other categories).

Jobs in Technology:

Simply Hired Technology Jobs – According to Simply Hired, there are more than 804,000 Technology job opportunities. The link to the left will search technology for you. On the left hand side of the page, jobs are listed by title followed by additional filters and lists. At the top of the page you can click for email alerts based on your selection. You can also click to save the search. The REALLY neat button is the “Who Do I Know” button. Click this button, sign in to LinkedIn or Facebook and Simply Hired will tell you which of your contacts are somehow associated with the companies listed (for the jobs you’ve selected).

Indeed Technology Jobs – Indeed.com has a similar number of technology opportunities – over 829,000. Indeed has filters on the top left hand side for salaries, title, company, location and a few more. At the very top there are links for forums and trends. “Email this search to a friend” is on the right hand side of the page. There is a “get emails update” box on the bottom of the page for the related search.

Good luck in your search.

There is always lots of debate about what percentage of jobs are filled by recruiters versus through someone you know. For me, almost every job I’ve had (and I’ve had lots), was through a recruiter with the exception of one. On the flip side, I’ve probably hired as many people through recruiters as I have through someone I know. Where I currently work, the vast majority of positions are filled through recruiters (maybe 75%). Most larger companies leverage their internal recruiting staff, leveraging LinkedIn and job search boards to do most of their recruiting, although they do turn to recruiters for the tough positions. So now that I’ve definitively solved that debate, on to today’s topic – covering recruiters from CareerAlley’s library of links.

Targeted Search:

Alden & Associates, Inc. – This firm specializes in executive recruiting for Higher Education. Although located in Massachusetts, prior searches cover many locations (which is true for many recruiters). Clicking on Executive Search will take you to a page that shows their current searches as well as targeted searches for Athletic Administrators, Senior Administrators and Head Coaches. Applying for a specific position will bring up a screen to enter the appropriate information. If you don’t see specific positions to apply to, forward your resume (with a cover letter).

Edgelink – Specializing in direct hire and contract staffing for Technology, Edgelink’s site has a number of resources for the job seeker. There is a blog (link is at the top right-hand side of the page) and there is a link to “About Edgelink” which has links to a number of resources. Clicking on “For Candidates” will open a page that allows a search of current assignments, “submit resume” and candidate login. As with all of these sites, best bet is to search jobs first and apply if appropriate, otherwise use the “submit resume” link.

Butterfass, Pepe & MacCallan – This firm specializes in Financial Services, the hardest hit industry (so far) in the current recession. Main page offers information on the company, services offered, industry links and “submit resume”. You can also forward your resume via em from the contact page (although I would recommend the “submit resume” function).

Medical Executive Search Associates, Inc (MESA) – Based in Arizona, MESA has been in business for over 20 years and specializes in the Medical Industry. Click on “Candidates” from the main page, fill out the form (don’t forget to click the “send your resume” link on the right-hand side of the form). Although the first page has key contact information, there is no indication of previous placements on the website

Addison Search – This recruiter focuses on four industries: Finance & Accounting, Information Technology, Administrative and Healthcare. From their main page, you can click on one of the four industries. This takes you to a page that has jobs for that industry by city (middle of the page) with locations on the left. Below locations is a Job Hunting Tips area where you can get additional information on Resumes, Search Firms, Interview Tips and more. A very good point they make under “Search Firm Rules of the Road” is that you should keep track of where your resume is sent. Don’t let more than one search firm send your resume to the same place. This is not good for you and certainly won’t help with your relationships with the search firms.

Tyler & Company – Tyler & Co is a Healthcare Executive Search Firm. Their site includes information for candidates as well as job search (Open Positions on right-hand side of the page). Clicking on “Contact Us” will take you to a page where you can either search for jobs or submit your resume.

Street Advisor Group – This company provides both job placement and consulting services. Their home page has a listing of the latest job postings. Clicking on Job Seekers takes you to the advanced job search page. You can also submit your resume from this page. Street Advisor Group specialized in Wall Street placement.

Stan Hamlet Associates – Stan Hamlet Associates specializes in placement for Accounting, Auditing, Tax, Finance and HR for Fortune 500 companies. Their main page has sample postings and the email addresses of their staff. Their areas of focus are also listed, clicking on these takes you to a dedicated search page/listing of jobs associated with that profession. Clicking on “Apply” on the left hand side of the page will take you to a page that allows you to apply for a specific job or submit your resume.

Good luck in your search.

Few fields impact as many people as Education. We all remember our first day of school, our High School Prom and our College days and, for some of us, getting sent to the Principal’s Office. Tough times have impacted the Education workforce just as it has most other industries. That being said, there are many opportunities out there if you are flexible (and quick to apply). From Teachers to Professors to Principals, today’s post focuses on resources, advice and who’s hiring.

Where to Look:

School – Jobs – This is a job search board that focuses on (as you might have guessed) education related jobs. The main page has a simple interface, leading with their search page. You can enter your area of expertise, location and desired salary for your search. The right hand side of the page has additional links for your resume. Click on the job of your choice for a full page description and contact information. There were 377 job opportunities when I checked the site.

Jobs4Teacher.com – Another job search site for teachers, you can register or just go right into the simple search (What and Where). At the bottom of the page are additional links for Teaching Jobs by State, Education Jobs by State and top teaching jobs. Once you click on the State option, a page with states are listed as well as an interactive map.

Recruiters for Education:

Directory-of-Recruiters – This listing of recruiters who specialize in education is posted on i-recruit.com. There is a brief overview of each recruiter and each has a link to that recruiter’s website. At the top of the page are additional recruiter links for Higher Education, Medical Education and eLearning. The right hand side of the page has additional links for related resources.

One of the first part-time jobs I had when I was in college was in Retail. Granted, it was working as a cashier in a (now bankrupt) department store. It’s where I got my first taste of “working with the public” and I can tell you, there were as many rewarding experiences as there were lousy experiences. Retail is an interesting occupation, you get to learn a lot about a wide range of products, you get to work with people and there are many different roles you can play. Probably more than most industries, Retail is generally hard hit when times are bad and it also a large percentage of part-time or seasonal workers. Even though times are still tough, there are still an amazing number of jobs in Retail. Today’s post provides a few resources for those looking for retail careers.

Retail Chains:

Macy’s – A national retailer with over 800 stores and over 161,000 employees, Macy’s is one of the best known retailers in the US. Their careers page has a company overview center right with embedded links to their jobs page and college recruiting site. If you follow the jobs page link, you are led to their job search page. The top of this page has links for benefits, about Macy’s and apply. Below this is a general job search box where you can search by job function or state. There were 4,251 job opportunities when I checked the page.

Lowe’s – A specialty retailer, Lowe’s is a “do it yourself” retailer similar to Home Depot. As with many retailers, there are a number of career choices when looking at their Careers page. For Lowe’s, these are: Stores, Distribution or Corporate Headquarters. These categories are listed at the top middle of the page. The top of the page also has tabs, one of which is for College Recruiting. The Job Search link (a tab at the top or a box on the middle right hand side of the page) leads to a search engine which allows job search across the entire company. There is a Hot Jobs box on the right hand side of the page categorized by job function. Interestingly, you can subscribe to this section of the page via an RSS link. There is no easy way to search across the entire company, you must first select your city and state.

Sears Holdings – Another well known retailer with a broad business model, combined with Kmart several years ago is struggling through the recession like many retail chains. Their careers page has links a the top of the page for Areas of Opportunity, College Programs, Events and Search Jobs. The center of the page has links for opportunities by type of job (Entry Level Hourly, Professional/Salaried and College/Military Programs. Clicking on Search jobs brings up two choices – Professional or Entry Level jobs and clicking either of these links provides additional job search choices.

Kohl’s – A another retail store company, their careers page leads with “building great futures”. The page is filled with 5 boxes representing the different career options: Campus Recruiting, Corporate Headquarters, New York Office, Stores and Distribution Centers. You can check each of these career choices to see the available jobs or use the “current openings” at the top right hand side of the page. There were 336 job opportunities when I checked the page.

Retail Recruiters – This firm is a national recruiter specializing in Retail from Department Stores to Discount Stores to Supermarkets. Their web page has two boxes of interest on the left hand side of the page: Career Opportunities or Submit Your Resume. Clicking on career opportunities provides a partial list of jobs or you can submit your resume for consideration.

For those of you who have followed by blog from “the early days”, you will know that I work for a Wall Street firm. Two years ago, the answer to my blog title would have been “no one”. But today, there are more jobs on Wall Street than they can fill (“not true” you say?). Some of the headhunters I use to fill my open positions have been begging me for names of potential candidates for all of the jobs they have. How can this be? There are two things driving this trend. First, all of the Wall Street firms made very deep cuts in their headcount (more than they could afford if they wanted to get the work done). Second, just about every firm on Wall Street has recovered. The combination has created one of the most dramatic turnaround in supply and demand in recent memory. Today’s post provides leads to “Who’s Hiring on Wall Street”, were there are over 13,000 career opportunities across the companies and sites listed below.

Goldman Sachs – Goldman is much in the news, and they do have jobs and back to earning large profits. Their main career page is pretty impressive. Several tabs at the top for Careers, the Firm, Begin and Search, click Begin to (you guessed it) begin. More tabs on this page, with Key Dates, Unique Positions, Apply Now, Recruiting Events and Summer Intern Toolkit, plan to spend a fair amount of time surfing this site. While you can’t search for a list of jobs on Goldman’s site, you can use this link for Indeed.com – Goldman Sachs Jobs.

Morgan Stanley – Another big firm on Wall Street, their careers page has tabs at the top for Why Morgan Stanley, University Programs, Search & Apply and more. Center page includes links for background on the company while the right hand side of the page has two links for job search. Bottom right hand side of the page includes a link for featured opportunities. Clicking on the “Search All Jobs” link at the bottom of the page leads to a full page where jobs must be searched by division where there were 1,890 career opportunities when I checked the site.

JP Morgan Chase – Another well known financial institution, their career site provides an overview of the company and then has links for Experienced Hires and University Programs. There is a link for “Jobs in Demand” as well as a “Search Jobs” tab. As with the other sites, it is worthwhile to register. There were over 6,965 job opportunities when I checked the site.

Bank of America – Bank of America, which now owns Merrill Lynch following the financial crisis, is another one of those “Banks on Wall Street” (like JP Morgan Chase). Their careers center leads with an company overview, followed by selecting your country so that you can begin your job search. The left hand side of the screen has links for Job Search, Job Areas, Lines of Business, Campus Recruiting and more. There were over 4,000 job opportunities in the US when I checked the site.

JobsOnWallStreet.com – What better place to look for jobs on Wall Street than a search engine with that name. There is a Candidates section on the right hand side of the screen, where you can post your resume or click Find a Job. Above this are additional links, including a Financial Recruiters directory (not yet populated) and a Job Openings link. There were over 1,200 job opportunities with a Wall Street description when I checked the site.

Good luck in your search.
