Excellence, therefore, is not an act but a habit. – Aristotle

If you’ve just completed or are nearing completion of art college, you’re most likely well aware of the competition in the arts jobs market you’ll undoubtedly be facing. Fortunately, there are a number of ways you can vastly increase your chances of securing a job right out of the gate. Creativity is the hallmark of any artist, so use it to your advantage. Optimising your portfolio, taking advantage of real-world networking opportunities, and utilising the Internet will set you apart from the crowd and maximise your employment probability.

Portfolio Optimisation

Any artist’s portfolio is a continually changing representation of their achievements. If you look back at your work from even a couple of years ago, you’ll no doubt see how you’ve grown and expanded your skills as an artist. When you submit your portfolio to any employer, it should accomplish the following:

Demonstrate your individuality as an artist to show you’re not like every other artist applying

Showcase only the best of your work

Display any special abilities or unique pieces

Skim through your portfolio and ask yourself if it meets these points. Don’t be afraid to take out pieces which you’re unsure of or aren’t indicative of your most exemplary work – it would be better to have a smaller portfolio than one that is brimming with mediocre or ho-hum examples.

Take Advantage of Local Networking Opportunities

Most areas have a number of outlets for artists to display their work, meet peers and employers, and generally involve themselves in the community. Seek out these opportunities and make your voice heard whenever possible, even if it’s something as simple as asking a local restaurant if they would care to display your work. Networking really allows you to get creative with how you can spread word of your art. For example, you might contact local performers such as bands or drama groups and offer to design or contribute to their flyers or promotional material for free in exchange for credit. This also conveniently doubles as material for your portfolio.

Develop a Strong Presence on the Internet

It’s little wonder that so many artists have taken to the web in order to receive more recognition and, in many cases, get hired. Convert your portfolio to digital format if it hasn’t been already, and create your own website to conveniently showcase your work to potential employers. Furthermore, don’t discount the many social networking sites at your disposal. Aside from the most common ones, seek out online communities specifically tailored for artists. Be active with your followers and engage them frequently – if you’re looking for work, don’t be afraid to say so. Word of mouth can travel a long way, especially on the Internet.

The trouble is, they are usually married to each other.” – Ann Landers

Four (maybe more) long years and here you are at your last Spring Break. Who would’ve thought? Four years sounded like a long time when you were a Freshman. Now it’s time to pay the price – time to go out into the real world and get a job. If you are really lucky, you already have a job lined up (not very likely these days). And, if you’ve been following the advice of this blog, you’ve been spending part of your college days priming the pumps of your job search. Whether you’ve been working hard at finding a job or have not yet given it a thought, there’s no time like the present to get focused (or refocused) on your job search. Toss one last drink back (if you are of age of course) and then let’s get started.

Ready, Set, Go – You’ve got a plan, right? Okay, not a problem. Take a look below.

Keep a list to keep track of which sites you’ve visited. Include your username and password for each site. You think you will remember them but you won’t. Also include the last date you visited

ALWAYS return calls as soon as possible, start off your day doing this

Review your top 5 job search sites

Check jobs on LinkedIn

Respond to emails as appropriate (and related)

Research, research, research – making a list of companies you would like to work for

Register on 3-5 company websites

Register on 3-5 job search sites

Send your resume to 3-5 recruiters/headhunters

Use job agents and leverage technology

Register where you can and make sure you upload your resume

All done with every list known to man (not likely)? Recycle the list, revisit the job search boards and try new searches

Best Sites for College Job Search – So many job search sites, so little time. A few of my favorite sites are listed below. You need to balance your time in your job search. Focus on a few sites for career opportunities:

CollegeGrad.com – One of the best sites for entry level job search. Lots of great information and resources on this site. The top of the page has tabs for Top Employers, Top Jobs, Top Careers and more. Move further down the page an you will find a link to the 2011 Top Entry Level Employers Survey (a very powerful tool which lists top employers with links to their site). There are a bunch of links on the left hand side of the page which will also help you with your search. The main search tool is in the middle of the page.

Collegerecruiter.com – Another site that is a must have for college grads. Top of the site is a job search box where you can do a quick search or use their advanced search (or look outside of the USA). Right below the search box is a link to (hundreds of thousands) internships (more on internships later). Newest job postings follow center page and there are links at the top of the page for Job Seekers as well as Advice and Resources.

When all else fails – Internships – If you can’t line up a job when you graduate, you should consider an internship for the summer. This will give you some hands-on experience, references and potentially a full time job.

Internships, Apprenticeships, & Volunteer Opportunities – An amazing source, the Riley Guide’s list of internship links will not disappoint. Starting with a list of Internships and Fellowships sites, the site lists additional resources for both study and non-study experience abroad. And, while getting paid would be nice, you should also consider looking at the volunteer opportunities sites listed here as well.

InternMonster – This site is still in Beta, but it is a great job search site dedicated to internships. There are links at the top of the page for internships, students and blogs followed by a search engine for internships. Select Industry, Major and State from the drop down lists and the site returns opportunities. There is a login area for students on the left hand side of the screen (and it is free) with a list of featured companies on the right hand side of the page.

Best Companies for College Grads – If you have to work (and I’m assuming you do), then why not work for one of the best companies for college grads or one of the best cities!

Best Places to Work for College Grads – This article, from AOL.com’s Jobs section, provides some really good advice along with a bunch of embedded related links. Please check out the related links as well as the “Search Jobs” link on the right hand side of the page.

25 Best Cities for College Grads – You got the “who” above, what about the “Where”? This article, from thedailybeast.com provides a pretty deep dive into what cities to consider along with a bunch of criteria that is also important (like housing, average age and number of singles). Also take a look at the pictures so that you can get a view of the cities as well.

Good luck in your search.

“Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds that you plant.” – Robert Louis Stevenson

Have you recently left university, keenly clutching your hard-earned degree, and are now considering your next move? If so, then you are certainly not alone, both because of the continued thriving supply of new graduates and something rather less positive, the nation’s persistent problematic unemployment statistics.

It’s therefore likely that in readiness for this key, unquestionably rather intimidating moment, you have already attended no shortage of career advice sessions at your chosen institution, including receiving plenty of information on relevant job, training and interview options and strategies.

We’re not here to use this blog to merely recycle those same old clichés, but instead to shine a spotlight on some of those less frequently mentioned priorities when the time comes for you to hunt for graduate jobs

Such priorities include…

…keeping your online profile clean

We’ve all had embarrassing drunken photos posted on Facebook, or for that matter made a comment on Twitter or an Internet message board that we have later regretted. Indeed, there’s a relative permanence to your online footprint that makes it all the more important to be wary of what you use the World Wide Web to say and do.

There are, however, still various steps that you can take to minimise any damage, including using the privacy settings of Facebook and Twitter to only show your personal information to those people that you choose to make your friends and followers. You can also create new profiles on sites such as Xing and LinkedIn, in the process creating a much more professional online image.

…experimenting in your job hunt

Given the primacy of the World Wide Web, it’s easy to forget that there are so many other ways of finding graduate jobs than merely visiting the most obvious job search websites and performing a search. It is doing precisely this, in fact, that is most likely to expose you to the greatest amount of competition for that dream role.

So, what do you do instead? Well, what you do instead is mix things up, making the most of those more obscure job hunting strategies. Rather than applying ‘blind’ for a particular role, for example, you may want to concentrate on building up a potentially lucrative network of contacts. Or maybe you could try visiting the websites of smaller companies rather than applying for jobs at the larger corporations at recruitment fairs?

When it comes to the ever-unpredictable search for graduate jobs, it’s all possible.

…brushing up on your interview technique

Finally, let’s imagine that you’ve refined that, made a good few applications and have received the call to the interview room. This is your cue to get researching, finding out about the latest industry developments in addition to the challenges that are relevant to this particular job. As you prepare, consider how you will integrate this knowledge into your answers to particular types of questions.

And of course, one of the most important elements of all when you are looking for graduate jobs is showing plenty of enthusiasm, both for the job hunt in general and each particular role that you seek. Good luck!

This is a guest post by Barry Magennis on behalf of WikiJob. WikiJob lists the latest graduate jobs vacancies including finance jobs, engineering jobs and law vacancies.

If you would like to submit a guest post to CareerAlley, please follow these guest post guidelines.

Good luck in your search.

If you are a graduate looking to widen your career opportunities then work experience is crucial. This may sound paradoxical for graduates. How are you supposed to get your first job if it requires already having worked in a similar job before?

Many large companies these days are taking advantage of the dire economic environment and using unemployed students as interns whilst selling them the spiel of providing them valuable work experience.

If you are looking for an internship you will need to ensure it can directly boost your employment prospects, rather than just ticking a CV box and leaving you with no new skills except making a cold mug of coffee.

So what will that involve?

Think about the global economy today. Over and above your degree, what do employers, particularly those in multinational organisations, require? International awareness. As the global economy shifts from West to East, employers want to hire people who have a cultural awareness of how things work at the other end of the world.

Internships in China are a growing feature on graduate CVs. Now is the time to take advantage of such a thing and you may find ,rather than simply boosting your CV for employment potential back in the West, you land a full-time graduate position in China on completion of your internship, ending up in the heart of the new global economy.

Not only will you have the opportunity to develop professional skills but you will be able to add an element of character building to your CV. Entering and navigating a foreign workplace is an admirable achievement and shows bravery, an open mind and motivation; qualities all sought after by the world’s top employers.

Many Chinese internships organisers also offer you Chinese language programs, again another vital opportunity worth taking advantage of.

Are you willing to take the challenge to boost your job opportunities?

Whether you have just graduated from college into the middle of a rotten job market or your previous job has disappeared, it is essential that you get back into the game and that you do it as quickly as possible! The truth of the matter is that while jobs are scarce, there are a wide variety of options open to you. Consider some of these options and try as many of them as you can; you never know when you are going to get the jobs of your dreams.

Try a new industry: A career change, especially when you’re young, is a good choice if you are worried about being in the wrong field. If you are having issues finding something in your own niche, try someone else’s! While switching to a new industry can be a little risky, you’ll find that it might be the best choice that you have ever made!

Get some extra training: This may mean going to a trade school or going back for a master’s or a PhD. While this does not make you more money in the short term, you are essentially making an investment in your future. Choose training that has an end-goal in mind, and be sure that you know what kind of work you will be doing if you get the degree you are after.

Work on your social networking: Remember that everyone you chat with is a potential contact. Ask people to put the word out for you and to let you know if there are openings at their companies. This is something that can make a huge difference. They say that it’s all about who you know, but at the end of the day, it’s pretty easy to get to know someone.

Volunteer. If you are out of work, chances are good that you are going crazy from boredom. There is a limit to how much time you can spend filling out resumes, so get out of the house and go volunteer for a cause you find important. You never know when volunteering will let you expand your skills or provide you with a contact to a new job.

Consider affiliate marketing if you have a computer and a reliable internet connection. Affiliate marketing is a good choice if you are ambitious and a good people person, and it offers you valuable skills that you can take back with you to the standard work place. There are also plenty of people who try affiliate marketing and never look back. Choose a good company with a product you believe in for the best results.

Start a consulting business. Is there something that you do well? If so, there is a good chance that there are other people who want to do it. Working as a consultant allows you to freelance and to create your own schedule while offering your expertise to others at top dollar.

Start a crafting business. With sites like Etsy and eBay at your disposal, you can turn a crafting hobby into a crafting business. Think about the jewelry that you make or the drawings that you create. You never know when someone might want to hang it up in their den or their living room. This is a great way to start your own business while doing something you love.

You are somewhere in your (hopefully) four year college career and, if you’ve not already figured this out, the experience is likely to be different than you envisioned when you began. Whatever your major (and no matter how many times you change your major), your ultimate goal is to have a career in the field of your choice (which is hopefully your dream career). But your four years of college may not be enough to land the job of your choice. Graduation does guarantee a job. On the contrary, your college diploma just means you are now qualified to look for a job. But why wait until you graduate. Why not get a head start on the job hunting process? To do this, you need to add a second major as early in your college career as possible. Your second major should be Job Search Preparation.

Learn Everything You Can About Your Major – No, this is not about taking “Your Major 101“, this is about understanding how and where your major is applied in the working world. Now is the time to explore the types of careers and jobs that use your major. Use your college years to research companies, connect with industry groups and start to build the network you will need when you graduate.

Experience, Experience, Experience – Need I say more? Education is great, but experience is even better. Use your four years at college to get some work experience in your major. This can be done in many different ways. Internships (as many as you can do), Work/Study, volunteering, etc. There are many ways to get experience before you graduate and hands-on experience is what will give you an advantage over those graduates who’ve not done the same.

Job Search Marketing Toolkit – If you are a regular reader of my blog, then you are familiar with my Job Search Marketing Toolkit approach. While most of the “tools” look like they are geared towards experienced workers, this is not always the case. You should start building your resume, cover letters, interview skills and elevator speech now (see the next topic for Networking). Yes, these tools will change as you gain experience, but by creating these documents early in your college career you will have well defined tools by the time you graduate.

Networking – Build Yours Now – It is never too early to build your network, arguably the most valuable tool during your entire career. So, you may ask, how do you build a network in college? Everyone you meet potentially becomes part of your network. Your family, your classmates, your roommates, your professors, and so on. Build your network now.

In college on your “own”, trying to figure out midterms, finals, spring break, dealing with roommates, meal plans, rushes, finding time to party, etc. It’s a delicate balance. At some point (hopefully after 4 years unless you are on the “5 year plan”) it will all come to an end and you will need to find a job. Four years sounds like a really long time, but trust me, it will all be over before you know it. The last thing you need when you graduate, as you try to assimilate back to your parent’s house, is to linger on the unemployed line. College grads are finding it more difficult than ever to find jobs in their chosen field, and many have to resort to jobs that were traditionally filed by those without a college degree. Whether you are a freshman or a senior (or anywhere in between), there are lots of things you can do now (or should avoid doing) to improve your chances of getting a job when you graduate.

Internships – Doing an internship (at least once) during your college career is probably one of the most important things you can do. Besides getting hands-on experience, you will meet people who may hire you (or help you get a job) when you graduate. Additionally, it will look great on your resume once you graduate. Even if you are a senior now, you can still do an internship after you graduate and before you look for a full time job.

Internships, Apprenticeships, & Volunteer Opportunities – If you haven’t visited the Riley Guide in your quest for a job or summer internship then you’ve been missing one of the best career sites on the Internet. Known for their vast listings of career links, their Summer Intern section will not disappoint. Starting with a list of Internships and Fellowships sites, the site lists additional resources for both study and non-study experience abroad. And, while getting paid would be nice, you should also consider looking at the volunteer opportunities sites listed here as well.

How to Find a Last Minute Summer Internship – Maybe you waited too long and are scrambling to find your summer internship before your parents make you work at some fast food joint for the summer. Take a look at this site. In addition to give some great advice as to how to approach your search, you can enter your email account and have opportunities sent to you every day. As if that is not enough, the right hand side of the page lists Internships for current week. Take a look.

Study Abroad – It’s not just about visiting a foreign country (although that is certainly a benefit), it’s about getting international experience, learning about other cultures and learning about diversity. Most colleges offer an exchange program. They are very competitive programs, so get started as soon as you can at your college. I’ve listed a few links below, take a look.

Protect Your Internet Profile – Your Internet profile will haunt you if you are not careful (and it is not a ghost you can easily get rid of). What you do, say and post on the Internet will likely be found by anyone looking to hire you. While having an Internet profile is fine, you do need to be careful as to what is posted (including pictures, webcams and “unusual postings”. Once the “wrong” information is out there, it is very difficult to get rid of.

It’s getting close to the “most wonderful time of the year”. Thanksgiving turkey followed by the festive gift giving Holiday Season and then New Years Eve and all of those resolutions none of us will keep. If you are searching for a job as a new college grad, the holidays can be a bit stressful. Way too much time with your relatives who don’t seem to have a problem asking (for the 100th time) - “Do you have a job yet?”. The good news is, you are not alone (yes, misery loves company). If you can believe the news reports, the last few years have been rough times for college grads. That being said, there are jobs out there. Today’s post will give you some job search stuff to do over the holidays.

Companies that are Hiring College Grads:
