Who’s Hiring? (Volume I)

Although we are in a severe recession, there are still jobs to be had. The available jobs may not match perfectly to the employment pool (location, experience, credentials, compensation, etc.), but look at any job board and you will see what I mean. But what companies are actually hiring? Let’s find out.

  • Who’s Hiring – The Wall Street Journal’s (WSJ) online career site lists companies that are currently hiring (click the link at the beginning of this sentence). Using the WSJ links will levearge WSJ’s search engine and will return all jobs for whatever company is selected. As as example, clicking Target yields 733 jobs across all of Target’s locations. Using a company’s career site generally serves two purposes, searching for available jobs and, more importantly, registering your details so that you will be alerted to openings for that company. For this post we will leverage the WSJ site for the names of hiring companies but use those companies career sites directly (instead of the WSJ’s search engine).
  • Target – A well known and highly regarded retailer, Target’s career page has a virtual tour of the company, search current openings, look at opportunities (experienced hires, internships, new grads, etc.), get updates on job openings and Resources for Candidates. Clicking through “search current openings”, you can search by opportunity and from that screen you can add your profile. The site is well organized and provides not only information on Target but resources for candidates.
  • Walt Disney – Imagine working for Disney! In addition to the Disney Theme Parks, Disney also owns ABC TV, Miramax, ESPN, Disney Cruise Lines and more. Their career site has information on the company, Job Openings and Student Programs. Their Openings link takes you to the job search which allows a broad array of search choices. You can also create a profile, create a search agent and register on the site. Their student programs offers several very impressive programs for college students (I will cover this in ore detail in the next College Grad post).
  • Allstate – Known for insurance, Allstate’s career site offers extensive information on the company as well as detailed explanations about career choices (such as Actuaries, Auditing, Claims, Information Technology, etc.). You can start your search by selecting Job Search (for generic positions) or “Become an Agent” as well as a few more choices. Selecting Job Search takes you to a standard job search screen (with an advanced option) as well as “submit your profile” at the bottom of the screen. Allstate seems to have a broader range of jobs as there are Insurance Industry specific positions as well as the “traditional” (Finance, HR, Operations, etc.).
  • Computer Sciences Corporation – CSC provides technology business solutions delivered via Consulting, Systems Integration and Outsourcing. Their job page, in addition to the traditional Job Opportunities and company information pages has pages dedicated to Career Events, Military Programs and University Initiatives. Their GlobalSource page is dedicated to career development and job search in what CSC says is “real time” (24 hours a day, 7 days per week). The job search page is divided into “Job Search” and “My Job Information” (where you can register and track your information).

Good luck in your search.
