Amazingly, this is my 200th post! Thanks to those who have been dedicated readers.
Deciding which job search sites to use is as clear as mud. There are hundreds of search sites, some of which are scams, some of which are a waste of time and some of which are actually quite good if you know what you are looking for. While I try to point out the sites that I think are a waste of time or are scams, it is not always easy picking those sites that might work for you. Targeted job search can be very effective if used in the right way. It does narrow your choices which could be good or bad depending on your search effort.
- AVS: Science and Technology Career – This job search site focuses on Science and Technology. Start with the “Job Seekers” button in the center of the main page. The top of Job Seekers page has two tabs that will be of interest to you. My Account, where you can create your profile, job agent and manage jobs. The other tab, Jobs, you can browse jobs, View all jobs, conduct an advanced search or look at your saved jobs. From the Job Seekers page you can also look at educational courses from the left hand side links. The Jobs page lists searches by job category, State/Province, and by Country. At the top of this page you have the option to view all jobs or do an advanced search. There were 133 jobs when I checked the site.
- IEEE Computer Society Career Center – This site specializes in engineering, database and software development. The main page is a little busy, but much of the right-hand side is filled with ads. There are two sets of tabs on the page, one set at the top and the next set down a bit from the first (focus on the second set). The usual set of choices – Post Resume, Find Jobs, Job Agent, Login and Create Account (right hand side tabs are for employers). Featured jobs are listed on the left hand side following the tabs. Clicking View Jobs takes you to the job search page, where you can view all jobs or browse jobs. View all jobs reveled 133 job opportunities.
- Physics Today Jobs – Yes, you guessed it, science, engineering and computing jobs. This search site has tabs at the top for Job Seeker signon, Search Jobs, Post Resumes, Job Fairs and more. Left hand side of the page is Find Jobs (with featured jobs are listed below) and the right hand side Post Your Resume with a number of networks listed below. You can view, browse by category or use the advanced search.
- National Society of Professional Engineers – As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, professional organizations are an excellent source of job leads. In addition to all of the industry information on the site, there is a job board on the right hand side of the page. There are a few featured jobs listed, but click “All Postings” to get to the full listing of jobs. From the linked page you can conduct an advanced search. There were about 35 job opportunities when I checked the site.
- Power Plant Jobs – The tag line – “The most popular Source for everything you need to know about Power Plant Jobs” says it all. Tabs at the top of the page cover Salary Surveys, News and All Powerplant Jobs. Below this are links for submitting your resume and creating job alert links. There is a quick search in the middle of the page followed by a listing of job resources. The left hand side of the page has a link to advanced search and new jobs last 10 days. This is followed by a number of other links and job resources. At the bottom of the page are links per by state.
Good luck in your search.
