I’m retired after 28 years of law enforcement experience in 3 different agencies (2 local, 1 federal). It is true that the field of criminal justice has become more competitive – I believe mostly because of the high number of people wanting to serve while there is a finite number of positions. However, I would not lose heart in seeking a position because many though highly qualified from an educational standpoint lack the ability to make it through the background investigation. I was so distressed by this fact that I wrote Now Hiring Criminal Justice Professionals, An Insider’s Tips on Seizing the Ethical Edge to be released on September, 2011. My purpose was to let hopefuls know ahead of time how their lifestyle and life choices would be evaluated so when the time comes they can make it through the various screens permitting them to get those great jobs. Again, I would just say that if you are highly “ethically marketable” I encourage you to apply for the positions you are interested in recognizing that due to a high volume of applicants, it might take a while before you are hired.

I suggest those of you who have just recently graduated and cannot find employment do an internship. You can work part time in any job for money and gain more experience in an internship part time. Mike, the above MS, is not an exception. Many people with graduate degrees are having a hard time finding a job. However, I also am getting a masters (directly after my undergrad) and have found a criminal justice related position. You have to remember everyone is not promised a 50k job after graduation. Sometimes you have to start as correctional officers, case managers, ect. They may pay less but it will help you the next year around when you are facing new criminal justice graduates in the job market. FYI apply for entry level jobs here –> ***USAJOBS.GOV***

The big mistake i ever made is to get my master degree in criminal justice. I thought that I will be hunted by recruiters soon after graduation. I have been searching for a job in this field for almost two years and I applied for tons of position but I have’nt even recieved one single call for interview. My resume was prepared by professional and it met the proper standard for resume’s criteria. However, my next goal is to make a major transition toward a higher degree in health care administration instead. Since health care market is highly- demanded and increasingly proven to be the best sector that always in demand, my next step is to obtain my PHD in health care administration.

It seems to me that the Federal Government is the strongest hiring agency in criminal justice and law enforcement right now. The states, towns and counties are too financially strapped to bring on lots of new police officers and security specialists due to the overall economic climate. Where I live in Nassau County, NY, there's alot of criticism of the high salary levels of police officers, which is largely an outgrowth of the fact that the county is broke and people are worried about over-spending in every area of the budget. The feds, on the other hand, can always print more money. Some additional info available here on my site about criminal justice degrees.
