Where are the jobs?

Most of the job opportunities are not just centered in the largest cities (although it may seem that way). Large cities will obviously have more jobs, but do not necessarily have as many as you think if you take into consideration the number of unemployed in that city. There are plenty of local jobs too, and the number of people applying for these local opportunities is lower than those applying for jobs in the major cities. Today’s post focuses on looking for jobs locally.

  • Localcareers.com – This job search board focuses on local jobs. The main search page has an advanced search function in the center of the page. There are tabs at the top of the page for Login, Search Jobs, Post Resume, Career Resources and Job Fairs. You can post your resume or leverage many of the career resources on the site. The site also has the ability to search by state or city using drop-down boxes (these are below the main search engine). Clicking on City will link to a page which lists cities by state. Granted that not every city in the US is on the page, but yours might be. Searching on Cheyene, WY as an example returned 130 jobs.
  • LocalJobBoard.com – When you load this site it indicates how many jobs are listed (1,758,037 nationwide and over 6,000 cities when I checked).  There are most likely some duplicates here, but the number is still large. The main screen lists every state and the number of current job opportunities in that state is listed as well. As an example, Iowa had 15,623 jobs.  At the top of the page there are some tabs with Search Jobs, Post Resume and Create Job Alert. Click on the state where you want to search and the page will list the most recent listings on the left hand side. On the right hand side you can refine your search within the state by job function or by city (directly below job function). Each city is a sub-set of the state with the same format. Seems like a very good way to track down the jobs in your city.
  • zeLocal.com – This site is broader than just job search (find anything local), but you can leverage it for local job search. On the right hand side of the page there are tags (called zeneighbors), click on the “jobs” tag. Once you’ve done that, you can refine your search by using the “refine results” box on the right hand side of the page. Firs time use is a little difficult, but you will get the hang of it after you start using it.
  • Statelocalgov.net – “A directory of official state, county and city government websites” is the tag line. The link takes you to a listing of state employment sites (listed below the intro). For some states there are additional listings for job opportunity related sites. Click any of the links (they are all different) for the state where you want to work.  There are quite a few resources and it is worth your time to take a look.
  • Local Job Search – How to Find Local Job Listings – This article, from About.com, provides information on using local job search resources as well as leveraging sites via the US Chamber of Commerce (a link is in the article). There are a number of tips and methods for local job search all with links to the resource.

Good luck in your search.
