“We owe a lot to Thomas Edison – if it wasn’t for him, we’d be watching television by candlelight.” – Milton Berle
They say that Lightning only strikes once, so hopefully we won’t see another recession as devastating as the one we are in. But it does feel like things are starting to settle down and, without a doubt, more job opportunities will be available via the largest companies than smaller companies. As we work our way through the list, take advantage of the links and find your dream job. Speaking of dream jobs, some could very well be a nightmare too. With that thought in mind, I will be skipping those companies on the Fortune 500 that have since crashed (and in some cases burned as well). Today’s list covers quite a range of companies and the two industries most severely impacted by the current recession (Auto Manufacturing and Financial Services).
- Ford Motor - While I did skip General Motors (for obvious reasons), I do think that Ford should be reviewed for this list. Ranked at number 7 (same as last year), we all know what they do for a living. Their careers site is an easy read. The center of the page has large boxes for Job Openings, Career Programs, Hiring Process and more. The left hand side of the screen has the same links. If you select the Job Openings link, you will need to select the specifics as there is no way (that I found) to check jobs across the entire company. Unsure what you want to do? Click the Career Programs link where you will see a list of potential opportunities (and if you click through, descriptions of each function.)
- AT&T – Ranked at number 8 (up from 10 last year), AT&T is a telecommunications company. Of course they are also known as the only iPhone provider in the US (and this has helped increase their growth). Their Careers page is very bright (sorry, I don’t know how else to describe it) with the center section having a number of links that expand to text descriptions when you pass over them with your mouse. These include: Career Possibilities, Student Relations, Getting Started and more. Similar links are included below the center box followed by additional links to Events, Videos and Join Our Talent Network. Click Career Possibilities to see the listing of job functions (retail, Premises Tech, Engineering, etc.). Click any of the job functions to go to the job search page. You can then search by category, location or job groups. Difficult to tell how many jobs are available across the entire company, but there are plent of jobs if you click through some of the options.
- Hewlett-Packard – Ranked at number 9 (up from 14), HP is well known for its printers, computers, medical equipment and recently acquired EDS (separate job search site). Their career site has a company description in the middle of the page with links on the left hand side for Search Jobs, Submit your Profile, How to Apply, Students and Graduates and more. Click search jobs for their job search engine. You can enter your criteria (at the bottom of the page is a listing of jobs). There were 1,977 job opportunities when I checked (seems high, but that is the number).
- Valero Energy – Ranked 10 on this year’s list (up from 16 last year), Valero is the largest oil refiner in the North America. Valero has over 20,000 globally and had a net decrease in jobs of 571 last year. The Valero Career Site offers 4 choices: Professionals, Refinery Operations, Corner Store Careers and Internships. The top right hand side of the page has a career center where you can submit your resume, review submissions, create job agents and create a profile. Click Job Search from the left hand side of the page to go to the search page. There were 50 job opportunities when I checked the site.
- Bank of America Corp – Ranked 11 (down from 9), BoA is now partially owned by people like you and me (taxpayers that is). This is one of those companies that potentially could have been skipped for my post, but I do feel that they will make a go of it in he long term. Their career site has links on the left for Job Search, Job Areas, Campus Recruiting, Global Careers and more. The center of the page has a simple search engine which returned an amazing 2,649 job opportunities when I checked the site.
Good luck in your search.
