The Best Companies to Work For – 2010 Vol 3

You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.” – C.S. Lewis

Several weeks ago a friend of mine had an opportunity to interview at the “company of her dreams”, or in other words, one of her “Best” companies. She decided to pass on the interview because she felt she “would not get it anyway”. One of those “self-fulfilling prophecies” I suppose.

In several previous posts on this topic I’ve provided some background on how companies get to be on Fortune’s “Best” list. And that’s all well and good, especially for those who are working for one of the companies on the list. But sometimes you need to define your own “Best”, otherwise how will you know where you want to work? What is that you say, we don’t always get to work where we want? Well, true as that may be, you will never know unless you try. We all have them, those “boy would I kill to work there” companies. But how many of us act on our dream? Not many I would venture to guess. So, what’s the point? Go for your dream company, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain!

  • Robert W. Baird & Co. – Ranked #11 on this year’s list (up from 14 last year on the way to the top over the last few years), Baird is an investment advisory firm, providing a range of financial products. They hired more than 115 people last year and had 6% growth in new jobs. Their career page is balanced between Current Openings and Working at Baird. You can search for jobs regionally (U.S., Europe and Asia) or by professional background with a dedicated link for Internships. There are also links for Internships. You can register and submit a resume or search jobs. There were 86 job opportunities when I checked the site.
  • Bingham McCutchen – This law firm and is ranked 12 on the list, up from 30 last year. Based in Boston, they have four separate career site pages: Law Students, Judicial Clerks, Lateral Associates and Staff Attorneys with the links for these located on the left hand side of the screen. Center page is a company overview. You need to check each of the job categories to see current opportunities.
  • W. L. Gore & Associates -  A global company  and ranked 13 on the list (up from 15) with over 8,000 employees and 270 jobs added in the last year, W.L. Gore’s product of note is Gore-Tex, but their product range and the industries they cover are diverse. Their career page has links for Jobs by Region, Compensation, Opportunities for New Graduates and several links for company background. Clicking on “Apply for Careers by Region” leads to their Explore Opportunities and Apply Online page. They have an extensive FAQ and help section on the page and provide an amazing amount of help support for job applicants. There were 80 job opportunities when I checked the site.
  • Recreational Equipment – 12 years and counting on the Best Companies list, REI is ranked 14 on the list (the same as last year). REI produces recreation related clothing and equipment. Their career page provides detailed information on the company’s benefits, which is very impressive (and I’m sure one of the main reasons they are on the list). You can register on the site, create job search agents and manage job submittals. The site provides full background on the company, including culture and diversity with the primary links located on the right hand side of the page. There were over  30 job opportunities when I checked the site.
  • Zappos.com – Moving up in the world, Zappos is ranked 15 (up from 23 last year) – Zappos is the number 1 seller of shoes on the Internet. Their career site starts with two job search choices: “Find jobs in Nevada” and “Find jobs in Kentucky” as well as links to background on the company and a short video center page. Clicking on either location lists the available jobs (Nevada had about 25 jobs and Kentucky had 2 when I checked). Click on a job that matches your criteria and you can apply online (including resume upload). What is not clear is if there is a resume database that matches your resume against other job opportunities.

Good luck in our search.
