Taking your Job Search Mobile

With most companies banning personal email accounts and with thousands of people searching for a limited number of jobs, you may want to consider going “mobile” to the extent you can.  Sometimes waiting until you get home may just be too long.  Even if you are out of work and looking full time, having the ability to read and respond to emails can be key if you are not near a computer.  Most cellphones these days can access email &/or the Internet, although smartphones (like Blackberry or the iPhone) are best.  Many websites have a “mobile” version and today’s post will cover some of what is out there to help you take your search mobile.

  • USAJobs.org – This site is a job posting site which allows job search and resume posting.  They also have a section where you can create a video interview (the next generation of job search).  USAJobs also has a free app for the iPhone (called Jobs!) which allows you to search and apply for jobs from your iPhone.
  • LinkedIn – Now LinkedIn has created two tools for smartphone users.  There is LinkedIn mobile (m.linkedin.com) which you can use from your cellphone’s browser.  It has most (but not all) of the functionality of the regular LinkedIn website.  The second tool is an app for the iPhone (called In) which has most of the sites functionality , but not all.
  • Careerbuilder.com – CareerBuilder is another site that has a mobile version (http://mobile.careerbuilder.com/device/).  From the looks of it, the site is pretty basic (job search only).  If you find a job you like, you can email the link but it does not look like you can apply via your cellphone.  Sign-in does not appear to be necessary to search for jobs.
  • Monster.com - Last, but not least, Monster also has a mobile version of their site (http://mobile.monster.com/).  You can also do a search and email the job to someone, but there is also an “apply to” function on the mobile site.
Good luck in your search.
