Getting help with your job search

As with most things in life, sometimes you can “do it yourself” and sometimes you need professional help. The job search process has become very complex and very competitive, you need to think about:

The Internet has, in some ways, made the process easier but has also made it more competitive.  For those individuals who have been with the same company for 10, 15 or 20 years, the entire job search process has completely changed.  For many individuals, this may be only the second time that they’ve had to look for a job.  Just like the big home repair job that is just too complicated to do yourself, it may be time to consider help in your job search.
This post will cover a few of the resources available to help in your search.  It is not an all inclusive list, and some of the options may be “pay” services.  The point to remember is that this is not about saving money, if you need the help and you can afford the cost this is a very important investment (so choose wisely). Please also keep in mind that the list shows very different choices which are not directly comparable to each other. I will revisit this topic from time to time and add additional resource links.
  • Job Search Debugged – Thanks to a reader for bringing this site to my attention.  This site offers different levels of support (get a coach, coach yourself, solutions and tools for networking).  While the Tips and Blog sections are excellent, the Resources section is amazing.  The Products tab offers a variety of products that vary from inexpensive to comprehensive (and more expensive).  A link to this site is also included in the Blogroll on the right hand side of the page.
  •  The Ladders – This site offers a basic free service with a wide range of tools and a Premium pay service which offers a wider range of tools.  The basic service includes a Career Advice section which has a broad range of resources (Job Search, Interviewing, Networking, Personal Branding and Networking).
  • Feroce – A professional coaching service which offers a broad range of coaching specialties (too vast to list here).  Certainly worth a look, includes a blog and free consultation .
Good luck in your search.
