The second most important document after your resume is your cover letters. No resume should be sent without a cover letter. This is true whether you are sending your resume via “snail mail” or via email. Many job sites now give the option of including a cover letter as well, if this option is offered do not send your resume without a cover letter.
When to send a cover letter:
- When responding to an ad for a job (both Internet and snail mail)
- When sending a resume to an employment agency or recruiter
- When sending an introductory resume to a company or individual
- When sending your resume to a friend or acquaintance

- About.com – Cover letters – Another great About.com resource page. This site covers sample cover letters, how to write a cover letter, targeted cover letters, cover letter check list and more. Worth a read if you need help with your cover letters.
- Coverletters101.com – Looks like a website dedicated to creating cover letters. Some great tips for cover letter writing as well as info in resumes and job interviews.
- Bestcoverletters.com – This site includes an incredible number of samples for just about every industry. The site also includes tips for cover letter writing. This site should be one of your stops when researching cover letter writing.
Don’t forget to leverage your college or university career site. They generally have a wealth of resources, including cover letter samples.
