Check Your Job Search Attitude

And in the end it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years.” – Abraham Lincoln

“I can’t find a job. I won’t find a job.” Have you ever said these phrases or heard other job seekers say them? It is understandable if you have. After a while, you may become frustrated in your job search, especially if it seems like everyone else has a job. What could be holding you back is your attitude. According to one career coach, having the wrong attitude is the primary reason job seekers are not finding employment.

Here are a couple of tips to remember in your job search:

Keep a positive attitude – Finding a job takes time and effort. Set a specific amount of time each day for your job search. Despite what you may hear, there are jobs out there; you just have to commit to finding them.

Be ready to showcase you – In other words, you must sell yourself to potential employers through your resume, your skills, and in interviews. Your job search is the time to shine. If you have prepared to get a job, then you can put your best foot forward, and leave a good impression on employers.

To learn some ways to check your attitude, and gain a more positive mind-set in your job search, see the source below.

While a job search requires time and effort, displaying the right attitude is also important. Good things happen to those who wait and who have good attitudes.

  • Keeping a Positive Attitude Despite a Long Search – This article was published on the Wall Street Journal’s blog site and is a great read for anyone looking for a job (especially if it has been an extended job search). The article is short and to the point and you will most likely see some similarities to issues that you deal with in your search.
  • Toot your horn: Self-Promotion is key success – This lesson (toot your horn) was something that I had to learn well into my career. While it sometimes might be true that “do a good job and you will be rewarded”, self promotion will definitely help as well. This article, published on Collegecentral.com provides some great pointers that will help in your career and job search. It’s all about knowing and communicating what you’ve achieved in your career. Not everyone will know what you’ve achieved and not everyone will read every word on your resume. Definitely worth a read.

Good luck in your search.
