I got a job offer, now what? – Negotiating a Job Offer

You’ve just received a job offer for your dream job, now what? Negotiating a job offer can be difficult.  How do you get what you are worth without killing the job offer or selling your self short?  Before the negotiating begins, remember not to let the “heat of the moment” take over before you’ve had a chance to think it through.  Don’t feel pressured to accept the offer.

The obvious potential negotiating points are:

  • Salary
  • Sign on
  • Bonus (guarantee ?)
  • Vacation
  • Title
Not to worry, there are plenty of resources to review:
  • Evaluating a Job Offer – About.com has a very good series of articles covering job offers, including evaluating the offer and negotiating.
  • The Riley Guide – The Riley Guide offers a number of articles which covers this topic, including employment contracts and submitting your resignation.
  • Job Offer Negotiation – We’ve not covered any of these topics from the College Grad view. Collegegrad.com offers 10 or so articles that are definitely worth a read (such as “College Grad and still no job”).
  • Negotiating your job offer – Spencer Stuart offers a very good article on their website which covers topics such as “knowing your goals” and being objective.
Good luck in your search.

  • Every job has a different set of requirements, and every hiring manager has to justify the salary you’re asking them to offer you. Help them by building enough evidence to make it clear you’re worth the money.
